Dear Pool Guy;
What exactly is Black Algae? What does it look like and how do I get rid of it?
Signed,
Black and Blue
Dear Black and Blue;
Black algae (actually blue-green algae) is one of the most difficult varieties of algae to control and eliminate. This algae can appear as a blackish discoloration or a tar-like deposit on your pool surface.
Usually, it forms in cracks on pool surfaces especially plaster finishes. It has “roots” or “skeletal growths” that grow down through the crack to the gunite layer of the pool making it hard to remove and impervious to chlorine at normal pool levels. Usually, black algae will grow in poorly maintained pools.
There are actually different schools of thought on how to treat. Black algae must be treated, though, or it will only continue to grow.
First, what not to do.
Do not scrub the pool with muriatic acid. This will do nothing other than burn plaster. It may only make the Algae temporarily disappear. If you have your pool re-plastered make sure that the plasterer cuts away the spots were the algae was. I have seen pools that had Black algae before being re-plastered and soon after new plaster was applied it came back. Sometimes you have to remove the gunite as well.
Finally, note that the usual algaecides will not work on Black Algae.
Black Algae can be treated without draining the pool, but it will be unusable for at least two weeks and emits harmful fumes during the process. We don’t recommend this approach since it can harm your pool finish, especially darker finishes. If you still wish to handle without draining the pool, here is the procedure:
1. Close the pool for two weeks. Do not let anyone swim or animals drink from the pool.
2. Lower pH to around 7.0.
3. Add 8 gallons of chlorine to the pool.
4. Turn on filter pump let run for 24 hours at least.
5. Now you have to add the Ammonia Hydroxide. When you do this make sure that no one hangs around the pool for a few hours (there are some gasses from the mixture of chemicals).
6. Let your system run as normal after the 24 hours.
7. Brush pool with stainless steel brush as often as possible.
8. May have to add more chlorine after week one depending on the amount of Black Algae.
9. Once this is done there may be etching in the plaster from where the Black Algae was, to help with this get a sanding block from your local pool store or professional, and sand the areas were the BA was to make the plaster more uniform

The preferred method, however, is to drain your pool. Before draining, though, check with your pool builder or remodeler’s contract based on whoever refinished the pool last. You will probably find that, in order to maintain warranty, they must be informed prior to draining the pool or spa. Once given permission you may drain the pool. Don’t forget to turn off all pool equipment.
Then follow these steps:
If Black Algae is on the bottom of the pool:
1. Wear gloves and eye goggles
2. Brush algae with stainless steel brush. Be careful not to harm the pool surface as much as possible. It will be very difficult not to harm a dark-finished pool, though. Be forewarned
3. Pour Trichlor on top of the algae
4. Let sit for 2 to 3 days
5.       Brush again

If Black Algae is on the walls of the pool, add silver based liquid algaecide instead as per manufacturer’s recommendations. This is more suited to a vertical surface.
To prevent Black Algae from returning, the pool must be maintained more diligently.

#poolremodeling #poolplastering
Tips to Removing Algae from Swimming Pools

A quick and easy method to remove algae from your pool is to use an algaecide. Algaecide is a chemical treatment for swimming pools,Algaecide also prolongs the life of your pool filtration system because less plant material clogs the filters and intakes of your pool pump.

Make sure your circulation system is running properly
A circulation system in good working condition is one of the most important steps to preventing algae growth. To keep your circulation system running properly, you will want to regularly check and clean the skimmer and pump strainer baskets.
How to fix. Lots of shock, algaecide, backwash/waste/vacuum, and then the big one.... convert to a Salt Chlorinator!
Seth and I took Copper to Dogwood Park...it's a private dog park that has several pools. They're this color because of the algaecide.
