Driven by a combination of better manufacturing techniques combined with an increasing awareness of the longer term environmental and economic benefits. Originally it was limited to large sports clubs but now you are just as likely to see it on your neighbour’s garden.
The benefits really fall into 3 distinct groups:-
1. Lifestyle and ease of use. There is no doubt at all that in our busy lives time becomes more precious as we seek to juggle all our responsibilities. Mowing the lawn can take 2 to 3 hours out of your week and that is for a normal size garden. Artificial grass needs very little maintenance and can free up a lot of time. It is worth mentioning two distinct types of users who also find it very valuable:-
a. Older people who cannot physically mow their lawns.
b. Holiday home owners who are not always “on site” to look after their lawns.
2. Environmental issues. As our weather grows warmer there will be more pressure on restricting water usage. Hose pipe restrictions can really destroy a natural lawn, but artificial grass will not be affected. Another benefit from artificial grass is that it actively helps the environment. As well as substantially reducing water usage we also get
a. No carbon emissions from petrol driven lawn mowers.

b. No fertilisers needed.

c. Pollution from water run off carrying chemicals into the drains is minimised.

3. Special circumstances. It always surprises people to know the varied circumstances when artificial grass can be beneficial. Here is a brief list:

a. Dog runs. It can’t be dug up, its easy to clean and keep sterile and there will be no muddy paws. This makes it a favourite at dog kennels.
b. Swimming pools. Very useful as ground cover beyond the “splash back” area. No muddy areas to carry dust and dirt into the pool, no ruts from the sun loungers and stays green whatever the weather.
c. Roof gardens. If your roof is not strong enough to support a natural turf cover then artificial grass will fill in very nicely. It also means that you don’t need to worry about the grass clippings.
d. High wear and tear areas. Very often, especially with children, you can end up with parts of the garden where constant usage will not allow grass to grow properly and bald patches which can turn to mud cause real problems. Carefully laid artificial grass can blend in with surrounding features and help overcome this.
e. Event management. We have often seen artificial grass used when there are a going to be a lot of people in the garden. A good example would be if a marquee was planned.

Disadvantages of artificial grass.
In the American south, with their extreme weather conditions it can sometimes seem a little odd when you get the baked dry yard of one house right next to bright green of a neighbour who has laid artificial grass. Fortunately for the United Kingdom we have not yet had the extreme hot weather of Texas and Arizona!
Other disadvantages? Well to be honest there aren’t any. Price wise it can is usually less than paving or other artificial coverings and when you measure the investment over the life of the grass it can in fact work out cheaper than laying and maintaining natural turf.
Things you might not know about artificial grass
Some artificial grass needs an infill, this is usually sand or rubber crumb. If rubber is used then it has probably come from shredded car tyres! You can also buy artificial grass which doesn’t need an infill.
Artificial grass was originally designed for sports pitches and sold under the name of astro turf in the USA. The early versions were not very successful but more recent changes have resulted in artificial grass being adopted by very large sports clubs. Historically, Thanksgiving began as a tradition to give thanks for a good harvest and to rejoice together with the rest of the community after much hard work. What better time to celebrate our SIX and a half year voyage and give thanks to ALL who have contributed to our struggle to bring to light illegal animal sales in Los Angeles Fashion District, and multiple illegal breeding operations in the City of Los Angeles and to seek justice for those who commit crimes of animal cruelty.

Especially, we thank each and every foster, volunteer, and supporter here who has contributed their time, energy and commitment to BWF. There are too many names to mention but know that every single one of you in some shape or form helped make a difference for the bunnies. It takes a community to move mountains and without all of us doing our parts we couldn't even make a dent. So give yourselves a big pat on the back for providing safe, warm, loving homes for foster bunnies, for providing important daily care for Petco bunnies, for transporting, for providing medical care to special needs bunnies, and for donating your time, supplies and money to help the bunnies and the cause. Thank you for showing your support through thick and thin and especially during times of crisis, for we couldn't possibly overcome them if it weren't for YOU!

Now, as bunny loving families across America sit down to full dinner tables with their pet bunnies enjoying all the privileges of a family member, it's more important than ever to remember million others suffering in bunny mills, labs, backyard breeders, fur farms, and abattoirs. Most people are unaware that most animal cruelty laws exempt farm animals and rabbits are not even covered under federal humane slaughter laws -- so their lives and deaths for our holiday celebration are unconscionably painful. This said, the road is still rocky with many challenges ahead, but continue we must and we thank you for your continued support in our efforts to make the world a better place for our much loved companions.

If you would like to do give a special gift for this Thanksgiving holiday, please make a tax-deductible donation via GIVEZOOKS at http://bunnyworldfoundation.givezooks.com/campaigns/bwf-fundraising-goal-for-2011 OR via PAYPAL at http://www.bunnyworldfoundation.org/donate/. You can also set up a monthly donation via PayPal, or donate to our vets directly towards the medical bills. He said he expects the investigation to zero in on the cause within a week or so. The launch pad on Wallops Island appeared to have been spared major damage.
As for launching again, Thompson said he expects a delay of at least three months in the company's next flight to the space station, which had been set for April.
"We are certainly disappointed by this failure, but in no way are we discouraged or dissuaded from our objectives," he told investors in a phone conference.
Former NASA Administrator Michael Griffin, who helped spearhead the commercial cargo effort, noted that the Antares rocket was still in development. He and others associated with the space agency went into the program knowing that failures were likely.
"It's obviously tragic and upsetting, but we'll move on," Griffin told The Associated Press.
In another few years, NASA hopes to launch astronauts again from U.S. soil — aboard commercially supplied spacecraft.
Orbital Sciences has never intended to fly anything more for NASA than cargo. The political fallout from the blast is more likely to affect SpaceX and Boeing, both of which are under NASA contract to fly Americans to the space station by 2017.
"We can't allow the one incident of the Antares vehicle loss to smear space commercialization in Washington and on the Hill," Boston-based space analyst Charles Lurio said in an email.
The mood was somber 260 miles up, according to space station astronaut Butch Wilmore. He and his five crewmates were watching a live video feed of the launch and saw the whole thing.
"It's a great loss," Wilmore said, quickly adding that the station pantry contains four to six months' worth of food and that there is plenty of research to go around.
Debris — potentially hazardous because of fuel — plummeted into the Atlantic and onto the launch site, igniting fires. Helicopters took to the air at first light Wednesday to track down remnants. Authorities warned people to avoid touching any debris that might wash ashore.
Ash and other debris covered Chrissy Mullen's house, patio and yard on Chincoteague Island a few miles away. She spent the morning cleaning up.
"We thought it was raining, but then we're getting particles out of our hair," she said. "The ash, the debris that was hitting our head was a little freaky."
Carolyn Dalton watched the launch from the mainland while chaperoning four middle-school students from Colleton County, South Carolina, who had a milk-spoiling experiment aboard the rocket.
"People were screaming, people were crying, people were in shock," Dalton said.
Just hours after the accident, Russia launched a supply ship from Kazakhstan on a previously scheduled flight to the space station, and it docked smoothly. Another load of supplies should be on the way in December, delivered by SpaceX from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
NASA is paying $1.9 billion to Dulles, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences for eight cargo hauls and $1.6 billion to California's SpaceX for 12 shipments. Tuesday's flight was insured.
Even before Tuesday's failure, Orbital Sciences had been reviewing alternatives to the Russian-made engines, Thompson said. The company recently had selected a different main propulsion system for use in a couple of years, and the switch may be accelerated if the Russian engines prove to be the culprit, he said.
The AJ26 engines — modified and tested in the U.S. — originally were designed for the massive Soviet rockets meant to take cosmonauts to the moon during the late 1960s.
Three years ago, an AJ26 leaked kerosene fuel and ignited on the test stand at a NASA center in Mississippi. Just this past May, another of the engines exploded during a test firing there.
In 2012, SpaceX's billionaire founder and CEO, Elon Musk, called the Antares rocket "a punchline to a joke" because of the Russian engines. SpaceX, by contrast, makes its own rocket parts.
"I mean they start with engines that were literally made in the '60s and, like, packed away in Siberia somewhere," Musk said in an interview with Wired magazine.
_">Rocket explosion setback for commercial space CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. (AP) — Crews searched for scorched wreckage along the Virginia coast Wednesday in hopes of figuring out why an unmanned commercial rocket exploded in a blow to NASA's strategy of using private companies to fly supplies and, eventually, astronauts to the International Space Station.
The 140-foot Antares rocket, operated by Orbital Sciences Corp., blew up 15 seconds after lifting off for the space station Tuesday, lighting up the night sky and raining flaming debris on the launch site. No one was injured, but the $200 million-plus mission was a total loss.
The blast not only incinerated the cargo — 2½ tons of space station food, clothes, equipment and science experiments dreamed up by schoolchildren — but dealt a setback to the commercial spaceflight effort championed by NASA and the White House even before the shuttle was retired.
It was the first failure after an unbroken string of successful commercial cargo flights to the space station since 2012 — three by Orbital and five by SpaceX, the other U.S. company hired by NASA to deliver supplies.
Although the cause of the blast is still unknown, several outside experts cast suspicion on the 1960s-era Russian-built engines used in the rocket's first stage. Orbital Sciences chairman David Thompson himself said the Russian engines had presented He said he expects the investigation to zero in on the cause within a week or so.

We wish to create a sanctuary for these animals where they can live in humane conditions and experience some quality of life while helping educate the public on how to better live side by side with all life on earth. We plan to refurbish and increase the size of the bear enclosure to 300sq/m so these magnificent animals can at least get around outside of their cages and even have a pool in which to swim, something they have never done before.
The wolf enclosure will also be increased substantially giving them opportunity to venture out of their tiny enclosures so they can at least run around and experience some quality of life. We have made a commitment to the local council that we will take care of these animals until the council can afford to take over. Donations from the public will guarantee a safe, humane and happier future for these animals and set an example for better practices in other parts of the world.
One of our biggest concerns is the fact that we only have about two more months before Ukraine’s severe winter begins to set in. At that point, it will be too cold to do anything but ensure the animals have food.
If you can't donate financially that doesn't mean you can't help - Share this with your friends on Social Media.....SHOUT it from the rooftops....
Please share this campaign with the links on this page, and let everyone know that you do not stand for animal abuse, and like us, you will no longer stand idly by as these horrific stories continue to mount. Together WE can make a difference.

So far we were able to raise funds to supply 16 tons of food and medical supplies for various zoos. Needles, CA: Needles City Manager Rick Daniels talks about the approved City of Needles Budget.

Members of the Needles City Council voted unanimously to approve the final parts of the general fund in the City of Needles Budget for Fiscal Year 2014 to 2015 during the Needles City Council Meeting held on Tuesday, June 24th, 2014 in Needles, California.

Members of the Needles City Council approved the general fund in the City of Needles Budget for Fiscal Year 2014 to 2015 in Agenda Item #4 which also included the 4 items; San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department contract, San Bernardino County Fire Department contract, the Needles Animal Shelter, and Needles Parks and Recreation recommendations, that were not voted on at the last Needles City Council Meeting.

** More information Agenda Item #4 regarding the City of Needles Budget is at the following City of Needles website address: **

http://www.cityofneedles.com/2014%20website%20file%20posting/1%20-%20City%20Council%20-%20NPUA%20-%20SARDA/6%20-%20June%202014/June%2024/cc_062414-4.pdf

ZachNews spoke with Needles City Manager Rick Daniels after the Needles City Council Meeting regarding the approved City of Needles Budget and to ask him some questions about the approved the City of Needles Budget.

** The following is what was asked about during the ZachNews interview with Needles City Manager Rick Daniels regarding the approved City of Needles Budget: **

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “The Council adopted the general fund of the budget and that is the fund that takes in most of the general taxes that people pay. For example; sales taxes, property taxes, Transient Occupancy Tax (T.O.T.), and what have you, and out of that fund is funded police, fire, public works, parks. So the Council adopted the budget tonight, but there were 4 areas that were left off over from last meeting they met.

** Regarding the San Bernardino County Fire Department: **

“The first one was... they asked for some reductions in cost from the fire department and San Bernardino County Fire Department reduced their cost by about $50 to $60 thousand dollars,” said Needles City Manager Rick Daniels.

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels what did the San Bernardino County Fire Department reduced?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “Well, a lot of that was overhead cost, but they're they're... they did not reduce the numbers of firefighters or trucks or equipment or anything else. They just reduced kind of their internal charges.”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if anything safety related was cut or reduced?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “No, no.”

** Regarding the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department: **

“The second issue that the Council asked for more information on was; we were requesting the Sheriff's reduce the number of sheriffs assigned out here from 7.3 to 6.3 and we met with Sheriff's McMahon and he understood our our issues; he done 2 tours of duty here himself. Robert Wickham, who is the deputy chief sheriff's also was with us and he done tour of duty in Needles and both understood our issues and our problems, but they felt that to reduce the number of officers by one would put their officers unnecessary at risk. So we did not get any relief there, but they did offer to work with us to increase the frequency of the local office and help us identify some outside grants and outside funding opportunists,” said Needles City Manager Rick Daniels.

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if there was no reduction in officers and no reduction in anything safety related?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “Right” and “Right”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels what the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department was going to do?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “They’re they're... we will... the contract that the Council approved tonight is in the budget is for $1.997 million dollars and that covers the full boat of Sheriff's officers.”

** Regarding the Needles Animal Shelter: **

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if the community will still have an animal shelter?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “Yes; the animal shelter is fully funded for next year.”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels what are the details on how the animal shelter got put back onto the City of Needles Budget?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “O.k. well we had to... we were face on having to shut down the animal shelter because we could not find a veterinarian that would be affiliated with the animal shelter and State (California) law requires that if you have an animal shelter, you are required to have a Veterinarian of Record that oversees the health or care of the animals; make sure that the sick ones are being treated well; that the animals are kept healthy. So without having a veterinarian, we were having facing closing the shelter. A fortunately, the Mayor (Edward T. Paget) found a veterinarian in Riverside (California) that owns a second home at Pirate’s Cove (East of Needles, California) and is coming through Needles anyways and agreed to provide the service of being a Veterinarian of Record, so at that point we then began to put... go back to the old budget and began to put that back into the budget that was adopted tonight.”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if there was anything to help reduced the cost at the Needles Animal Shelter for the City of Needles Budget?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “Yes; it was $10,000 of part time labor that was reduced, so we will be able to have a fully functionally animal shelter.”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if there was any cuts to the service, care, or supplies for the Needles Animal Shelter?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “No, no, no.”

** Regarding the Recommendations from the Needles Parks and Recreation Commission: **

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if the recommendations made by the Needles Parks and Recreation Commission placed into the City of Needles Budget?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “Yes, the City Council held a workshop on the budget last month and at that budget, the members of the Parks and Recreation Commission showed up and testified that they didn't want to see any eliminations to any programs. So what we did is we set up a meeting with the Parks and Recreation Commission and went through the budget in great details. And there were... for example: the summer camp is going to be reduce, not eliminated, but reduce from 8 weeks to 4; it is... that we are not changing the hours or days at the pool operation; that they looked at some fee increases in users of City recreation facilities such as there will probably be an increase the use of the golf course, uses... attendance and participation in sports programs. We've also... the budget includes and the Council has approved charging for out of city residences to use our facilities, for example: right now, all participles are charged the same amount, but kids and participles that are Needles residences have already made a contribution towards the program through their property taxes, and where as someone from Bullhead City (Arizona) has not but they come over here and use our facilities so the council -- the commission recommended and the Council accepted that there be a differential rate so that it will cost Bullhead City (Arizona) residents a little more to use our facilities.”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels what kinds of cost the people will see and how much?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “Well I don't recall the exactly, but it is the daily use of the boat ramp is not going to change, but for those who buy a season pass, it will go up about $35 / $40 dollars.”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if the swimming pool is going to stay open?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “Yes it is.” adding, “the aquatic center is going to operate the same hours and days it did last year.”

** Regarding the rest of the City of Needles Budget: **

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels how many positions will be lost?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “The City is having to go through reductions in force. We are implementing the budget; does not include funding for 4 positions that exist in the City today.

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels what are those 4 positions?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “They are 2 positions in the electric department, 1 in the water department, and 1 in public works.”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if the lost of those 4 positions will have any effects on services that people will notice?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “It shouldn't be because what we are going to do is we are going to have all 3 of those departments work and share staff, so we will cross train public works to assist electric and assist water, and for water to assist electric and public works, and likewise.”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if City of Needles Employees are already multitasking a lot as it is already?

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “Well they are, but not in those 3 fields operations; public works, electric, and water.”

- ZachNews asked Needles City Manager Rick Daniels if the public is going to notice a lots of things not being kept up such as; grass not being seeded as much, watering of grass that much, roads not being repaired and updated, or street lights not being fixed?”

Needles City Manager Rick Daniels said, “No, we should... we should be able to cover everything that was done last year. What we're not going to do is we can no longer or afford to have the grass over seeded around the Civic Center -- so the Bermuda next year will go dormant and they'll come back in the
BDSM for Beginners - Bondage Basics

Understanding the Safety and Sensuality of Restraints

Bondage can be one of the most delightful, sensual parts of BDSM, but it can also be one of the most dangerous forms, with improper preparation and technique. Bondage enthusiasts enjoy various types of bondage, often using simple household items (rope, silk ties, etc.) and often employing intricate, or purchased equipment and supplies (St. Andrew’s crosses, bondage boards, police-style handcuffs and shackles, to mention a few).

As with any BDSM activity, safety is paramount! For both enjoyment and protection from harm, think safety! Never do a bondage scene with someone you do not know well and trust completely! Never allow a first-time play partner to tie you up. Always let someone you trust know where, when and with whom you are going to scene. My fast and firm rule is to never play in private the first few (or more) times with a new partner. BDSM clubs and parties often have Dungeon Monitors present, for your safety, and even if they do not have Dungeon Monitors, having other people around who will help you in the event you need assistance, is a great idea. Before any scene, spend some non-scene time negotiating boundaries and safety. In addition, NEVER leave a bound or gagged submissive alone! More great ideas for scene safety can be found at http://sexuality.org.

A few of my favorite bondage apparatus and equipment:

St. Andrew’s crosses, bondage frames, and racks

The St. Andrew’s cross is also called an X-cross, and is a great support for long-term or lengthy bondage scenes, because it gives support to all the limbs as well as the center core of the submissive’s body, and so allows for comfort and relaxation.

A bondage frame is a tall rectangle, often made of steel or iron and secured to a base for stability, but doesn’t give any support to the submissive’s body, and can be less enticing for long periods of play.

Racks, made from wood or metal are usually an A-frame design. Racks can be great for play-torture scenes, (like Torquemada, the Grand Inquisitor and the Spanish maiden), but can also be terrific for general bondage and flogging scenes. The many struts of the rack give you a ton of great tie points!

Then, we have choices of restraint materials

Metal, Wooden, Silk, Rope, (and just about anything you can think of to tie or wrap around a willing body)

Metal handcuffs can be lined in fake fur or comfortable velour for soft restraint. The delicate bones and ligaments in joints are easily damaged, so be careful never to allow weight or tight stricture when playing bondage games! Handcuffs don’t have to be standard police issue cuffs, heck no! Cuffs come in fur, leather and we have a pair of awesome cuffs, called SportCuffs, lined in neoprene and with quick release Velcro closures. These are particularly comfortable cuffs, and the thick neoprene padding wraps the submissive’s joints in a protective layer. In our toybags, we also have a set of wrist and ankle restraints with suction cups. These Suction Cuffs are amazingly strong and work well in shower scenes, hot tubs and more, but be careful! Bondage and water can cause more danger than you want.

Wooden restraints include a variety of equipment. Spreader bars, stocks and pillories (think Puritan days), and bondage boards come to mind, right off. We have a bondage board, about six feet long and 2 feet wide, with eyebolts all along the outer edges, to provide tie points. Our bondage board lays flat on a bed or table. There are several bondage equipment makers who even design multi-use equipment. These can be broken down into different configurations, for different scenes, and, after your scene is over, can be hidden under a bed or in a closet. http://dungeonfurniture.com, http://www.toys4lust.com, and http://www.extremerestraints.com, are just a few of our favorites.

Silk, from strips of sheets and fabric to silk stockings and old ties, are erotic when used as bondage materials, but beware; knots in silk can be extremely difficult to remove quickly, especially if moist! Always keep a pair of paramedic scissors (http://kinkymedical.net) nearby when doing any bondage scene, but particularly when using silk! Don’t bother with the cheap dull scissors; get a good pair from Kinky Medical. Quality paramedic scissors are angled to avoid cutting skin or pinching, and are very sharp!

Ropes come in so many sizes and colors, choosing your favorite might be hard. Experiment with different textures and weights of ropes. We found great cotton-core, nylon covered rope in 50 ft. packages at Home Depot for under $10. Cut the rope into usable lengths, for example, we have several 20 ft lengths, several 12 and 10 ft lengths, and one each of uncut 50 ft length and a 40 ft length. The longer lengths make great body harnesses and dresses!

With safety and planning, bondage scenes can be so intensely erotic and pleasurable, for both parties. The sensuality of bondage scene, done well, exudes an essence of romance and passion. Watching a well-done bondage scene is a pleasure in itself, and having a partner who excels at the techniques and passion of bondage - well, let us just say - WOW!

Some excellent information here. Play safe!

Synthetic biology is a relatively young field, begun only about ten years ago. But in that time, we have made some astonishing progress. This is due, in part, to the enormous improvements in our ability to synthesize and sequence DNA. But we’ve also gained a much greater understanding of how the various parts of the genome interact. We now can reliably combine various genetic pieces to produce a range of consumer products, from biofuels to cosmetics.

In medicine, the synthetic biology community is pushing the boundaries by designing microbes that will seek and destroy tumors in the body before self-destructing. Synthetic biology also provides us a way to clean up our environment. We can build organisms to consume toxic chemicals in water or soil that would not otherwise decompose, for example. It can also help us to better understand flu strains and create vaccines. Synthetic biology will even help us feed the world. At MIT, researchers are working to build a process that will allow plants to fix nitrogen. If successful, farmers will no longer require fertilizer for their crops.

That’s not all we’re doing with plants, either. At the Joint BioEnergy Institute in California, scientists have found a way to expand the sugar content of biomass crops to increase their density and decrease the cost of biofuels produced from them. We envision that eventually we will be able to build just about anything from biology. Don’t be surprised if one day your computer has biological parts.

The recently released National Bioeconomy Blueprint notes that the field is already making an important contribution to the U.S.’s technological innovation and will be a key to our shift to a bioeconomy, or economic activity powered by research and innovation in the biosciences.

We still have many challenges to overcome, but we have laid a very strong foundation for the field. We believe that one day we will be able to fully utilize biology’s manufacturing capability. As one of my colleagues, Harvard scientist Pam Silver noted, the field is poised to explode, both in terms of what scientists can accomplish and what the public realizes is possible.

A Significant Advancement
A landmark of synthetic biology will launch this spring. It is an anti-malarial drug made from synthetic chemicals, artemisinin. It’s an important event for those threatened by the disease; each year, malaria kills more than one million people and infects an additional 300–500 million people. That’s over seven percent of the world’s population.

Synthetic biology has learned much from the past.
Artimisinin is not a new treatment for malaria, but our ability to produce the substance in a lab is. Traditionally, the drug is isolated from a plant, Artemisia annua. But by moving production into the lab, we’re liberated from the vicissitudes of the plant’s growth cycle as well as the fluctuations in global supplies and prices. Artemisinin is a milestone in science, too. It represents a watershed moment in particular for the emerging field of synthetic biology.

Managing the Risks
Like many things we do, synthetic biology comes with risks, especially when it comes to safety and security. But consider this: We fly airplanes, we drive cars, we treat cancer with poison— all of these activities could be dangerous, but they also have benefits that far outweigh the risks. We believe this is true of synthetic biology as well. As Laurie Zoloth, a bioethicist at Northwestern University, once said, “Synthetic biology is like iron: You can make sewing needles and you can make spears. Of course, there is going to be dual use.”

Here, I would say that synthetic biology has learned much from the past—at conferences such as Asilomar, we carefully considered how we can pursue our research responsibly. We work closely with regulatory agencies and adhere to our own institutional requirements. In fact, much of our work is with what are called Biosafety Level 1 organisms—the safest organisms known. We also have developed a robust partnership with the FBI to ensure that we are utilizing the best practices for lab security.

In addition to discussing approaches to risk and risk assessment, synthetic biologists are also working hard to minimize potential adverse effects. For example, Silver’s lab is working to create genetic self-destruct traits, termed “auto-delete,” as a way to ensure that genetically modified organisms don’t escape into the environment.

Along with the practical matters of safety and security, there are profound moral and ethical issues involved in our research. Many of us, especially our colleagues at the Hastings Center and the Wilson Center, are grappling with building a framework for all of us to use in our work. There are no easy answers, but I can assure you that we all want our work to benefit the public, solving global challenges, and making sure that we are well-equipped to live in the future bioeconomy...."

http://to.pbs.org/Z0UEAQ">Why Synthetic Biology Is the Field of the Future

by
Jay Keasling

Boric Acid Flames

The concept of colored Flames
You can use a methanol flame and various ionic substances (salts) to make colored flames. All of the flames pictured in this post were produced by me using the methods detailed herein. Most of the substances mentioned below can be obtained inexpensively from ordinary merchants (i.e. no need to visit a chemist).
green
boric acid (et al.)
lavender
potassium chloride
yellow
sodium chloride (et al.)
orange
calcium chloride
red
strontium chloride (et al.)
You only need between one and 3 mL of methanol for a non-overlarge flame to burn for a couple of minutes. See the snapshot of the vials and pen for an idea of scale.
Where to get methanol
The only easy means I found for getting small amounts of methanol is buying gas-line anti-freeze. HEET antifreeze can be found at 7-11, AutoZone, O’Reilly Auto Parts, etc. for about $3/bottle. It’s 99% methanol.
Green flames
For a few dollars, you can get a big box of boric acid at the grocery store, under its commercial name: Borax. Find it with the cleaning supplies. The green flame pictured at the top of this post was produced with Borax. It dissolves/suspends easily in methanol.
The problem with the boric acid flame is that when the flame gets very hot, it turns yellow. If you burn your methanol in a container that conducts the heat away, or if you only use a little bit of methanol (so that the flame does not continue too long), this may not be an issue for you.
Copper salts, such as cupric chloride, a.k.a. copper II chloride, produce a richer color, and when the flame gets hot, it migrates from green to blue. A cheaper alternative to cupric chloride is copper sulfate, which I found for five dollars a pound at the local feed and supply store (it’s used as an herbicide and an algaecide); however, although copper sulfate is used as a blue pigment in pyrotechnics, I was not able to get a colored flame from it in methanol. (Perhaps a future post will describe how this and other substances can be used in standard pyrotechnics to produce deeper colors.)
Lavender flames
Potassium is what gives us the lavender flame. You can find potassium chloride in your grocery store, sold as a salt substitute. Check the spice aisle.
You can see from the pictures that I got some nice color from the substance, but be warned that I could not get it to dissolve or suspend at all in methanol. Dissolving it in water and putting about one part of the water solution to six parts methanol gave me a bit of effect, but what was most effective was to also pour a pile of the potassium chloride into a container, cover it with methanol, and wait until the flame got quite as hot as it would.
Yellow flames
The two yellow photographs in this post suggest that I got a really rich yellow or orange flame, but in fact to my eyes, the flames seemed far less intense, not so different from a candle flame. I suppose that the camera’s vision was not true.
Sodium gives us the yellow color, and you can use table salt (sodium chloride) or baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), either of which can be obtained from the grocery store.
I found this substance much like potassium chloride in that it would hardly dissolve or suspend. Again, I recommend packaging the salt and alcohol separately, then pouring one over the other when it’s time to touch it off.
Orange flames
Calcium chloride, which a friend on staff at the local community college supplied me, provides a nice orange flame. This was probably a bad example to use because 1) I don’t know how to obtain it commercially, and 2) it is so hygroscopic that I don’t know how to work with it easily — in other words, if you leave the lid off of it, it will suck water from the air until you have a puddle of dissolved calcium chloride in your bottle. And I don’t even live in a very humid area.
Red flames
Strontium and lithium are used for red pigments. For about $3.50, you can get a tub of strontium carbonate (see previous post); lithium is about six times as expensive.
The red flame pictured above was produced with strontium, but strontium carbonate actually wouldn’t give me any color in methanol. I added muriatic acid (available at pool supply stores) to the strontium carbonate to produce strontium chloride, which is what I used in the flame. (Instructions on how to make strontium chloride appear in the previous post.)
Strontium chloride dissolves/suspends pretty well in methanol. When the flame is cool, you get a nice magenta color; when the flame gets hot, you get red/red-orange.
Tips & tricks
Use methanol because it has an invisible flame, which will allow us to see the colors emitted by the salts. — Other flammable substances, like ethanol or naptha, produce enough white light that adding any color to it will not yield an observable result.
Your salt pigments are not actually going through a chemical reaction. That means that they don’t get consumed, and you can recover them (or just pour more methanol on them) and use them again.
Because methanol is so apolar, it will not dissolve your salts as well as water would. It is necessary in some cases (mentioned below) to add water to your mixture and/or pour ethanol over a small pile of undissolved salt.
These chemical-to-color listings may differ from others you’ve seen
You can find long lists of chemicals and the colors they produce in pyrotechnics or flame tests. In both pyrotechnics and flame tests, your chemicals absorb more heat than our methanol flames will produce. Consequently, you read here that cupric chloride produces a green flame, but other sites will tell you it is a blue pigment.
You can achieve richer colors with higher temperatures, but for the treasure hunt for which my flames were intended, I preferred to avoid high temperatures and the copious amounts of smoke that accompany standard pyrotechnics. The small alcohol flames discussed here are safe for indoor use.
New post (Flux Core Mig Welding Techniques Inverter Migs) has been published. Read what the team at Tokentools Welding Equipment Supplies have to say about welders today!

MIG vs. Flux-Cored: Which Welding Process Is Right for You?

Tokentools Inverter MIG welders
You have saved for a long time and are about to make the plunge and buy your first wire feeder welder. Being a toolguy (or gal), you don’t want to waste your money on a toy that goes out with the trash in a few weeks. You most likely are very comfortable building things from wood, but you always wanted to step up to steel. You probably want to run it off of 240 volt input, so that it is very portable, but maybe stepping up to the 230 volt input machines with the option of welding thicker material (more than ¼”) is a valid point. You think the decision-making process is over when you are hit with yet another question – which welding process will you use? . . . GMAW (MIG) or FCAW (flux-cored)? If you are like most novice welding operators, you may be confused as to the differences of these two choices. The best answer depends on 3 things. First, what you are welding. Second, where are you welding it. And third, the surface finish of what you are welding. We will help you to decipher between the two processes, then describe advantages and disadvantages of each and wrap up by giving you usage tips. Ultimately, we hope to help you decide on a solution that will give you the best results for your application. The suggestions here are conservative and should be attainable by a beginner. Welding is a skill and an art about 95% can learn to do. Very few baseball players are able to hit over .350 in the majors. Very few welders have the skills to make picture perfect welds. It is critical to have good eye/hand coordination and a steady hand. Arc practice time is the only instructor that will teach you to truly set the machine properly. With basic motor skills, practice and patience, you should attain success at making sound welds.
The Definitions
Gas Metal-Arc Welding:
GMAW popularly known as MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and uses a continuous solid wire electrode for filler metal and an externally supplied gas(typically from a high-pressure cylinder) for shielding. The wire is usually mild steel, typically copper colored because it is electroplated with a thin layer of copper to protect it from rusting, improve electrical conductivity, increase contact tip life and generally improve arc performance. The welder must be setup for DC positive polarity. The shielding gas, which is usually carbon dioxide or mixtures of carbon dioxide and argon, protects the molten metal from reacting with the atmosphere. Shielding gas flows through the gun and cable assembly and out the gun nozzle with the welding wire to shield and protect the molten weld pool. Molten metal is very reactive to oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen from the atmosphere, if exposed to it. The inert gas usually continues to flow for some time after welding to keep protecting the metal as it cools. A slight breeze can blow the shielding away and cause porosity, therefore welding outdoors is usually avoided unless special windscreens are erected.
However, if done properly, operator appeal and weld appearance are excellent with MIG and it is most welders’ favorite process to use. Good technique will yield excellent results. The properly made finished weld has no slag and virtually no spatter. A “push” gun angle is normally used to enhance gas coverage and get the best results. If the material you are welding is dirty, rusty, or painted it must be cleaned by grinding until you see shiny bare metal. MIG welding may be used with all of the major commercial metals, including low carbon steel, low alloy steel, and stainless steel and aluminum with potential for excellent success by a novice.
Aluminum MIG Welding
Welding aluminum requires much more than just changing to aluminum wire. Get comfortable welding steel first. Since aluminum is very soft, it requires aluminum drive rolls that have a U-groove and no teeth to bite or cause wire flaking. Cleanliness of the wire and base metal are critical. Wipe the material with acetone on a clean shop rag. Use stainless steel wire brushes that have only been used on aluminum. Drive roll tension and gun length must be minimized. A Teflon, nylon or similar gun liner is needed to minimize friction in feeding the wire and 100% pure Argon gas is required for shielding. Special contact tips are often recommended. Special gun movement techniques are often highly desirable. It is a challenge, but it can be done.
Self-shielded Flux-Cored Arc-Welding process
FCAW per the American Welding Society, or flux-cored for short, is different in that it uses a wire which contains materials in its core that, when burned by the heat of the arc, produce shielding gases and fluxing agents to help produce a sound weld, without need for the external shielding gas. We achieve a sound weld, but in a very different way. We have internal shielding instead of external shielding. The shielding is very positive and can endure a strong breeze. The arc is forceful, but has spatter. When finished, the weld is covered with a slag that usually needs to be removed. A “drag” angle for the gun is specified which improves operator visibility. The settings on the wire feeder welder are slightly more critical for this process. Improper technique will have results that are magnified. This type of welding is primarily performed on mild steel applications outdoors. The Innershield® .035″ NR-211-MP is often used for the 115 volt machines and the .045″ Innershield NR-211-MPis typically used in the 230 volt machines. Farmers have found that these products can save a planting or harvest by repairing a broken machine out in the middle of the field in record time.
General Usage Rules
MIG

As a rule of thumb, it is recommended to use a compact 115 volt input (or 230 volt) MIG wire feeder welder indoors on clean new steel that is 24 to 12 gauge thick. 12 gauge is a little less than 1/8″ thick. 24 gauge is less than 1/16″ thick. The smallest wire (.025″) will make it the easiest to weld the thinnest (24 gauge) material. The .030″ diameter wire will weld a little faster deposition rate. If you need to weld 1/8″ to ¼” thick material with MIG, you will need the higher capacity compact machine which will require 230 volt input. The higher amperage range of this machine can better handle your welding needs in a single pass and you may not have to waste time with second or third passes. The 230 volt machine could also run .035″ diameter wire. To MIG weld material more than ¼” thick, you need a higher capacity truly industrial machine. If most of your welding will be performed indoors on clean material that is less than 1/8″ thick, a MIG machine that operates on 115 volts is probably your best bet for economic reasons in that a 230 volt input machine will be more expensive.
Flux-Cored

The flux-cored process is only recommended on materials as thin as 20 gauge, a bit thicker than the 24 gauge we said for MIG. In general, this process is best for welding thicker materials with a single pass, especially if you need to weld outdoors such as to repair a tractor out in the field. A 115 volt flux-cored machine using an electrode such as .035″ Innershield NR-211-MP will generally allow you to weld steel up to ¼”thick. Note that this is more than double the thickness maximum of 12 gauge with MIG on 115 volts. With the proper electrode on a proper machine, such as .045″ Innershield NR-211MP, and a 230 volt input machine, you can weld steel up to 1/2″ thick. Note that Innershield® NR-211-MP requires that the machine be setup for DC negative polarity.
Advantages/Disadvantages
While there are advantages and disadvantages to both processes, we will try to outline for you some of the most common.
MIG

Advantages

The best choice when cosmetic appearance is an issue since it provides lower spatter levels than flux-cored. The arc is soft and less likely to burn through thin material.
The lower spatter associated with MIG welding also means no slag to chip off and faster cleaning time.
MIG welding is the easiest type of welding to learn and is more forgiving if the operator is somewhat erratic in holding arc length or providing a steady travel speed. Procedure settings are more forgiving.
If you are skilled and get specific proper guns, shielding gas, liners, drive rolls, and electrode, MIG can weld a wider range of material including thinner materials and different materials such as stainless, nickel alloys or aluminum.

Disadvantages

Since a bottle of external shielding gas is required, MIG welding may not be the process of choice if you are looking for something that offers portability and convenience. MIG also requires additional equipment such as a hose, regulator, solenoid (electric valve) in the wire feeder and flowmeter.
The welder’s first job is to prepare the surface by removing paint, rust and any surface contamination.
MIG has a soft arc which will not properly weld thicker materials (10 gauge would be the maximum thickness that MIG could soundly weld with the 115 volt compact wire feeder welder we are referring to or ¼” with the 230 volt input compact wire feeder welder.) As the thickness of the material (steel) increases, the risk of cold lapping also increases because the heat input needed for good fusion is just not possible with these small machines.

Flux-Cored

Advantages

The Self-Shielded electrodes are optimal for outdoor procedures since the flux is built into the wire for positive shielding even in windy conditions. An external shielding gas and additional equipment are not needed, so setting up is simpler, faster and easier.
The flux-cored process is most suited for applications with thicker materials as it is less prone to cold lapping.

Disadvantages

It is not recommended for very thin materials (less
Filter Clean

All filters need to be periodically cleaned over the length of a pool season. We recommend cleaning filters twice a year (Spring & Fall). Daily filter cycles and routine vacuuming can lead to a build-up of dirt, debris, grease, oil and scale that routine backwashing cannot remove. This kind of build-up will lead to reduced filtration efficiency of the pool filter, resulting in cloudy, murky water. Reduced filter efficiency can also encourage algae growth and reduce the effectiveness of your pool maintenance products.

If it has been more than 6 months since your filter has been cleaned, call us to get it scheduled.

In particular for their training pitches as the annual hours of pitch usage can be increased substantially.
You can now buy artificial grass cut like carpet tiles. This is often seen with coloured grass, for instance terracotta tiles. This allows you to have designer coloured pathways and

Historically, Thanksgiving beg...

Rocket explosion setback for c...

Rocket explosion setback for commercial space CHINCOTEAGUE, Va.
