Talking to a group of reporters at the party’s Krishan Nagar office, the PML-N leaders Mohammed Mehdi and Tariq Gill said, terrorism was undermining the roots of Pakistan like termite and the government was pursuing National Action Plan to purge the country of terrorists. They said, whenever PML-N government come into power, forces which were against Pakistan’s progress bent upon to fail it. They said, all institutions were on same page and support the government’s agenda against terrorists.

They said, Peshawar incident had gathered all political parties on a single platform. The way, they said, politicians exhibited unity was unprecedented which was need of the hour. They expressed the optimism and said that with the support of nation, the government would be able to turn Pakistan into trouble free and a peaceful state where people could live freely and without any fear.
A study using expertise and capabilities at the +Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) at PNNL identified a novel cyanobacterial strain that grows rapidly and is amenable to genetic manipulation – qualities that make it useful for synthetic biology and metabolic engineering applications. The research team included scientists from PNNL, Washington University in St. Louis, EMSL and the +The University of Texas at Austin. Read more at http://www.emsl.pnnl.gov/emslweb/news/ideal-microbe-industrial-purposes.

* * *

Cyanobacteria are of considerable interest as production organisms in biotechnology. They can grow by harvesting energy from sunlight, an abundant energy source, and they consume carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. However, commonly used cyanobacterial strains grow slow. Furthermore their genetic and metabolic networks are not as well understood when compared with other bacteria and yeast models used for industrial applications. This study identified a novel cyanobacterial strain that grows rapidly and is amenable to genetic manipulation that makes it ideal for a wide range of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering applications.

In search for an ideal photosynthetic microbe for industrial purposes, researchers from Washington University in St. Louis, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory and the University of Texas at Austin identified a fast growing cyanobacterial strain called Synechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973. To characterize this strain, they performed whole-genome sequencing at WUSTL and proteomics at EMSL, a DOE national scientific user facility.

The researchers found the newly identified strain grows as fast as yeast, without requiring special nutrients such as vitamins. Its growth rate is not only the highest reported to date for any cyanobacterium strain, but is also more than twice as fast as a widely studied close relative. As a result, Synechococcus UTEX 2973 rapidly accumulated substantial amounts of biomass—a valuable trait in the bioenergy arena. The rapid growth of this cyanobacterial strain also facilitates genetic manipulation studies. The researchers generated two types of mutants by introducing a gene encoding a fluorescent protein and inactivating a gene involved in the regulation of light harvesting, demonstrating the newly described strain is amenable to easy, rapid genetic modification.

The genome sequencing data showed a small number of nucleotide changes are the only significant differences between the genomes of the two closely related cyanobacterial strains, which are 99.8 percent identical in their genome sequences. These findings revealed the genetic determinants necessary for rapid growth of cyanobacterial strains of significant industrial potential. Moreover, the proteomics data will be a valuable resource for the research community because the global proteomes of the two cyanobacterial strains had never before been analyzed. Taken together, the findings demonstrate the excellent potential of Synechococcus UTEX 2973 as a cyanobacterial strain for broad biotechnological applications.

Why is this important? A cyanobacterial strain that can grow rapidly and is amenable to easy, targeted genetic manipulation will expedite the process of characterizing the cellular biology and genetic and metabolic networks of cyanobacteria. The strain will also enable development of new synthetic biology tools for these microbes. The newly identified strain could pave the way for widespread use of cyanobacteria for carbon sequestration, biofuel production, biosynthesis of valuable chemicals, and search for novel pharmaceuticals.

Good morning! Here's your daily home bible reading for November 13, 2014.

Zephaniah 1:7-18 (VOICE)

7 Keep quiet now! You are standing before the Eternal Lord
because the day of the Eternal One is near;
His judgment is coming. He has prepared the sacrifice,
and He has chosen His guests with care.
8 On the day of the Eternal’s sacrifice,
this will happen just as He describes:
Eternal One: I will punish the rulers of Judah
and those born to royalty
And those so enamored with foreign ways
that they don’t act or dress like My people anymore.
9 On that day, I will punish those who jump temple thresholds fearing pagan demons,
those who exchange true religion for silly superstition,
And those who use violence and betrayal to steal from others
in order to make themselves and their king rich.
10 On that day, you will hear cries from all over the city of Jerusalem—
first a cry for help from the fish gate on the north side of the city,
Then a wailing cry from the newly-built Second Quarter.
Then crash! Stones are falling, breaking;
Sounds of destruction are coming from the suburban hills.
11 Cry out, those of you living in the bottom of Jerusalem’s southern hollow,
because I will stop all the traveling merchants.
Everyone with pockets full of money will be cut off.
12 On that day, I will personally search and illumine every dark corner of Jerusalem.
I will wipe out everyone who has numbed his senses with the dregs of his own wine
And says, “The Eternal will do nothing in our lives,
neither helping us nor hurting us.”
13 But they are wrong. Everything they value will be taken away.
Their houses will be destroyed.
They will build new houses and never have a chance to move in.
They will plant vineyards and never enjoy a sip of their own wine.
14 I’m warning you, this day of judgment is right around the corner.
The great and terrible day of the Eternal One is coming on you very quickly.
Listen, here it comes, the day of the Eternal One, and it will be very bitter!
Even your strongest and bravest will break down and cry out.[a]
15 On that day, you will see what happens when God is furious.
You will be overwhelmed with all the trouble and pain—total destruction.
You will watch the sky fill with the thick clouds and gloomy darkness.
16 You will hear the trumpet blast and battle cry
as He moves against the city that day.
You were so sure it was fortified against attack with its thick walls and high towers,
yet they will surely fall.
17 Eternal One: I will bring distress on all humanity,
and they will stumble around like the blind.
Why? Because they have sinned time and again against the Eternal.
Their lifeblood will be poured out like ash of a burnt offering.
Their bodies will be discarded like excrement.
18 Don’t think any amount of money can save them
from the terrible anger of the Eternal when that day arrives.
He will consume the whole earth in His fiery jealousy,
for He is going to expedite the annihilation of every living thing on the earth.

Komansky Center for Children's Health Celebrates a Quarter Century of Pediatric Advancements

For the past 25 years, Light Up a Life, the annual family event benefiting the Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children’s Health at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, has raised funds to support a number of pediatric patient care programs. The event has helped support a number of advancements in research, patient care and family support.

The study and practice of pediatric medicine has seen a number of dramatic changes over the past quarter century – from the use of iPads at the bedside, to emphasizing family involvement in patient care and recovery, to the emergence of online medical records. In honor of the event’s 25th anniversary, pediatric experts at the Komansky Center have come together to create a list comparing pediatrics then and now to show how far we have come in the fields of technology, patient care and physician training.

Technology:
Then
• 25 years ago, the only computers at the hospital were found in labs. Doctors seeking information on illnesses, symptoms and treatments would have to search the library, which often took time to navigate and held somewhat outdated information.
• MRI machines were scarce, and there was no known approach to treating concussions or headaches.

Now
• The emergence of the personal computer and hand-held devices over the past quarter century has transformed the way doctors are able to diagnose and treat patients. Routine blood test results can be retrieved almost immediately at the bedside, X-ray results are delivered electronically, the emergence of online medical records has transformed the way patient history is tracked and the internet can be used to quickly and efficiently find the latest information on medical studies and findings.
• Advances in MRI technology have made it possible to look at the brain and abdomen in ways that were inconceivable in the 1980s. Children can use apps to send information on the time and severity of their headaches in real time to their doctors. Pediatric concussion hotlines also expedite the diagnosis process.
Patient care and safety:

Then
• Medical staff treated the illness first. Pain management and emotional care took a backseat to treatment of the patient’s medical issues.
• Visiting hours for families were very limited, especially in the ICU. Parental involvement in patient care and treatment was almost non-existent, and it was very uncommon for parents to spend the night at the hospital.

Now
• Emotional care is one of the most important aspects of treatment at the Komansky Center. There is an increased emphasis placed on pain management and ensuring maximum comfort for patients and their families. Physicians and nurses now act as patient advocates – answering questions and alleviating fears. The hospital’s Child Life Services program, dedicated to alleviating children’s fears surrounding the hospital experience, is funded by the Light Up a Life benefit.
• Parents are encouraged to become an integral part of the health care team, and are kept aware of diagnoses and treatments every step of the way. Doctors and health care professionals are more accessible to families with emergence of 24-hour telephone hotlines and email. The Komansky Center’s Family Advisory Council, a group of dedicated family members committed to providing exceptional, family-centered care to all patients, is supported by proceeds from Light Up a Life.

Training:
Then
Most training was done by working directly with patients using the “see one, do one, teach one” method. With no additional options for training, junior residents trained at the bedside by treating patients and learning through experience.

Now
Over the last five years, simulations have been widely used to increase the skill and confidence of new doctors, leading to better patient treatment. Komansky Center pediatricians go through in-depth simulation training to properly prepare for direct patient interactions.

According to the federal agency, the black pinesnake is found only in Mobile, Washington and Clarke counties in Alabama, and 11 Mississippi counties, including Jackson and George. It has not been seen in Louisiana in more than 30 years.

If deemed threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the government would impose certain restrictions on activities like the use of herbicides, controlled burns and some timber activities in the affected habitat areas.

"The black pinesnake is an important part of the longleaf pine ecosystem in southern Alabama and Mississippi," Fish & Wildlife Southeast Regional Director Cindy Dohner said in a prepared statement. "Conservation efforts for the black pinesnake align closely with efforts already ongoing in this ecosystem for other wildlife like the gopher tortoise, eastern indigo snake, dusky gopher frog and the red-cockaded woodpecker."

The public comment will run for the next 60 days, through Dec. 2. A "threatened" species is defined as one which is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future.

The snakes are non-venomous, egg-laying constrictors. Adults range in size from 48 to 76 inches and are dark brown to black on both their upper and lower body surfaces. They have small heads with pointed snouts, and are good burrowers, according to the government.

The black pinesnake prefers sandy, well-drained soils with a dense, vegetative ground cover. Its longleaf pine habitat once covered roughly 90 million miles across much of the Southeast, according to federal officials, but has shrunk over several decades to about 3 million acres in the 1990s.

The Fish & Wildlife Service said actions taken for the snake also would benefit hundreds of other species in the same longleaf pine habitat.

The black pinesnake has been a candidate for federal protection since 1999. The action announced Monday is part of a process to expedite hundreds of petitions for protection that have languished for years. The government in 2011 agreed to speed up the review process to settle lawsuits brought by environmental organizations.

The move has drawn the ire of critics who contend that the Obama administration tipped the balance in favor of environmentalists. The U.S. House of Representatives voted in July to require Fish & Wildlife officials to make public the data it uses to make determinations under the Environmental Species Act.

The Nature Conservancy states on its website that the black pinesnake has declined along with longleaf pine forests.

"Decades of timbering, conversion to agriculture and development, and suppression of natural fire have reduced all of the South's once-extensive longleaf pine forests to less than 5 percent of its former range, making it one of the most critically endangered ecosystems in the nation," the website states.

The Fish & Wildlife Service also cites an increase in roads, which caused habitat fragmentation, fire suppression and agricultural and urban development.

With a seemingly chaotic host of modern-day problems, it is easy to forget that algorithms enable efficient execution of many essential tasks. In first-of-its-kind work, scientists from PNNL, Simula Research Laboratory, Purdue University and University of Bergen re-examined classical combinatorial graph algorithms, exploiting modern multi-core computers. Their work provided a new parallel version of the push-relabel algorithm for bipartite graph matching that maximizes the power and efficiency of modern computers. Read more at http://1.usa.gov/1re8U6J.

* * *

In their work, the researchers explored several techniques to expedite the computation of maximum matching, including using greedy initialization algorithms, search-space pruning techniques, and switching to serial computation when the algorithm runs out of concurrency. The impact of each technique was systematically studied and supported with experiments on a large set of input data chosen from a diverse set of applications. They then compared their new method with a separate class of algorithms based on the standard technique of augmentation. Some of the authors were previously involved in a detailed study regarding the efficiency of augmentation-based algorithms for maximum matching (refer to Azad et al. 2012).

Employing a Cray XMT supercomputer, the researchers implemented all of the algorithms in the C/C++ programming language using the OpenMP programming model to exploit multi-core architectures. Experiments were conducted on multiple test systems with a varied numbers of processors to examine the scalability of the proposed algorithms and present several lessons that are important to other researchers.

While the theoretical foundations for network flow and maximum matching were built as early as the 1950s by pioneers such as Ford, Fulkerson, Edmonds, Gale, and Shapley, the fundamental shift in computing warrants a reconsideration of these classical algorithms to exploit the power and efficiency of modern computers.

“Two things have happened in the recent past: our computers have become slower and parallel, and our data have grown several orders of magnitude,” said Mahantesh Halappanavar, a scientist with PNNL’s Data Sciences group (Analysis and Algorithms) and co-author of the paper describing this work. “Combinatorial algorithms are ubiquitous and help us solve many challenging problems not only in science, but in day-to-day life. Fast algorithms and efficient implementations targeting modern architectures and large-scale data will have wide and lasting impacts on numerous applications.

“However, as we discuss in the paper, parallelization is a challenging research problem with no easy solutions,” he added. “Hence, we are exploring a new class of algorithms for maximum matching that have direct implication for other algorithms, such as network flows.”

What’s Next? The techniques devised for the parallel push-relabel algorithms potentially could be expanded to preflow-push algorithms used for computing maximum flows. Typically, these algorithms are employed in transportation modeling or for examining human circulatory systems, atmospheric systems, or electrical current flows.

Similarly work on two Universities has also been directed to expedite on fast track basis.
It merit mention here that Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak has accorded approval to the establishment of two separate universities viz Air University and Technical University on a vast piece of land at Aza Khel, on GT Road and directed the concerned authorities to take necessary steps to expedite work on the projects and put them on ground in the shortest possible time. There exists a botanical garden spreading on 77 kanals while the rest of more than 650 kanal land of district council Nowshera is lying useless on which state of the art Air university and technical university of international standard will be setup.
A high level meeting to review the intial progress on the establishment of two new universities was held at CM Secretariat Peshawar with Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak in the chair. Besides, Minister for Higher Education & Information, Mushtaq Ghani, Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar Dr. Rasool Jan, Vice Chancellor Engineering University of Technology Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani, Vice Chancellor Agriculture University, Chairman CRC Haji Dil Roze, Principal Secretary to CM Mohammad Ashfaq and other high ups of concerned departments attended the meeting.
The proposed Air University will be established under the auspices of Pakistan Air Force while Technical University will be established by provincial Higher Education department. The Chief Minister termed the establishment of both the Universities as a milestone step and said that the establishment of these universities unique in nature would have a far reaching impacts not only on education sector but on the economy of the province as well adding that there would usher in a new era of economic prosperity and eco beauty in the province because technical education at universities level would get boost and new opportunities of employment, research and innovation would be explored.
Pervez Khattak was of the view that owing to its peculiar geographical location, Aza Khel was very much suitable for the establishment of such educational institutions while a number of educational institutions were already being setup in the same locality. He termed the promotion of technical education as the need of the hour and the best way to address the core issue of unemployment. He said that with the establishment of the technical university, Vocational & technical education would be promoted on modern and scientific lines and resultantly, not only maximum employment opportunities would be provided to the jobless young lots but industrial sector would also groom in the province.
“our province has suffered great losses because of dis-continuation of policies and lack of decision power in the past regimes but the same will not happen anymore and now whatever decision is once made it will be implemented at all costs and all such schemes of national importance will never be thrown in the cold storage”, the Chief Minister resolved. He said that both the universities will not be limited to imparting traditional education and training but these will be hubs of researches and inventions wherein researches works of international standard would be carried out besides imparting all types of technical training and ultimately our young generation will be inclined towards creative activities and inventions. However the effectiveness of these real estate websites are rarely seen given the average agent’s budget of a couple hundred dollars a month, if that, to spend on SEO and internet marketing. Compare that to the millions of dollars Zillow, Trulia, and realtor.com (lets call them the big three) spend on SEO and digital advertising. Essentially an agent website is a losing proposition from the beginning as a primary source of online leads. Further perpetuating the ineffectiveness of these sites is the fact that we live in a mobile driven world — more consumers are using mobile apps to search for real estate than websites. The fact is that the big three spend millions of dollars every year to make sure they come up on top for real estate searches. In my opinion, spending money on a website to search the MLS and look up your bio is simply a waste. It provides little or no value to the consumer as the chances of your website being inferior to the big three is pretty high. Consumers expect a level of functionality realtor website templates cannot simply deliver. Face the facts, your clients are still going to go to the big three to research homes before they buy. Use this as an opportunity to help consumers navigate housing searches and provide insider knowledge to help them make purchasing decisions.

The role of the realtor is changing as real estate agents are no longer the gatekeeper to housing data. They are changing, I think for the better, to local professionals who can provide deep knowledge about the community and know how to close a deal. Streamlining the housing search, expediting closing, and providing references to local pros are the new roles of the modern real estate agent.

To provide the best real estate experience to your clients and step into the role of the modern realtor, here are three steps:

1. Don’t change consumer behavior, optimize it.
Chances are your clients are going to search the big three to find and research a house. Engage with clients to let them know housing data found on these sites can often be misleading and inaccurate. Let them know to call you for clarification regarding housing information. This way you can keep communication flowing throughout the housing search process

2. The web is dead. Go mobile.Your clients use apps, you should too. Real estate is inherently mobile. Agents do not make money sitting in an office. The money is made out in the field meeting with clients, acquiring listings, and closing deals. This is why your own app to run your business is crucial as a modern realtor.

3. The majority of your leads comes word of mouth, enhance it.

Growing up in the real estate business, the one underlying factor I realized to real estate success is word of mouth referrals not online leads. The business of real estate is relationships. I believe the majority of a realtor’s marketing budget should be used to leverage technology to enhance relationships translating to an increase in word of mouth leads.

Will Caldwell, a recent college graduate living in San Diego, is the CEO and co-founder at Rivolix, a mobile real estate tech company that helps Realtors generate more word-of-mouth leads.

The APC caucus added that in acknowledgment of party supremacy, it remained committed to the directive and asked those who thought its members’ participation in screening of service chiefs and the budget debate meant they had flouted the order not to rejoice yet. Instead, it asked them to wait and see.
It also listed the alleged corruption cases by the federal government ranging from the unremitted $10.8 billion by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to the waivers and concessions amounting to the purported N1.4 trillion granted by the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as well as the industrial-scale theft of crude oil of about $2 billion monthly.

EMAIL.king2kng@yahoo.com">2014 Budget: Jonathan Appeals to N’Assembly to Expedite Action
In his first reaction to the directive by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to its legislators to block executive bills in the National Assembly, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday appealed to the National Assembly to expedite action on the 2014 Appropriation Bill.
However, the opposition party, APC, has said if the presidency wants the legislative cooperation of its members, all it has to do is to call the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu, to order.
The president, who spoke at a stakeholders’ forum on the Subsidy Re-investment Programme (SURE-P) in Abuja, said the prompt passage of the budget had become necessary, as it was a panacea to his administration's resolve at delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.
Represented by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, Jonathan said: “Let me appeal to Senator Ningi who chairs the Senate Committee on SURE-P to please help urge his colleagues in the National Assembly to expedite consideration of the 2014 budget which is currently before them in order for us to continue to deliver dividends of democracy to our people.”
Jonathan said his administration was determined to impact positively on the infrastructure needs of the country.
He said SURE-P had since its inception in 2012 become a critical unit of his administration's transformation agenda.
The president disclosed that over 190,000 youths had so far been employed under various categories.
He said this was apart from the programme's massive intervention in the railway, road construction and health care delivery system, among others.
The Director-General of the Budget Office, Dr. Bright Okogu, said the federal government’s share of the SURE-P's fund was N180 billion per annum.
Earlier in his remarks, Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State thanked the federal government for introducing the intervention programme which he described as laudable.
Despite the president’s appeal, the APC remained unyielding stating that it would only counter its directive after the Rivers State Police Commissioner has been called to order.
It also rebuffed the label by the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, who described the party’s directive as anti-people and undemocratic, stressing that there was nothing anti-development or anti-people about a party asking its federal lawmakers to withdraw legislative cooperation from a lawless federal government that is promoting and sponsoring anarchy in a state of the federation.
In a statement issued in Lagos yesterday by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party accused Maku of engaging in an emotional outburst that was devoid of reason or logic by describing as anti-national interest and anti-development the APC's directive to its members in the National Assembly to withdraw cooperation with the executive until peace returns to Rivers State.
It asked Maku to look inwards if he was earnestly searching for people who were anti-people and anti-development, and to ask his principal why he was finding it difficult to allow peace to reign in Rivers State.
“It is interesting that an Information Minister who does not see anything wrong in the illegal use of the police to deny the people of a state, in the nation he is purportedly serving, their constitutionally-guaranteed rights of free association, free movement and free speech, has suddenly found his voice to rant at perceived enemies of Nigeria, when the real enemies are within the government he is serving,” Mohammed said.
It insisted there was nothing anti-development about a party asking its federal lawmakers to withdraw legislative cooperation from a lawless federal government that is promoting and sponsoring anarchy in a state of the federation until it restores constitutionalism and the rule of law to that state.
“In case Mr. Maku has forgotten, it is his party, the PDP, that has used its majority in the House to frustrate the Petroleum Industry Bill that has now forced international oil companies to start divesting from Nigeria.
“Considering that oil remains the mainstay of our economy, who then is trying to endanger the nation's survival? Which party can best be described as anti-development if not the PDP?” it queried.
APC said Maku should tell Nigerians why the presidency was finding it so difficult to rein in the impudent and unprofessional police commissioner in Rivers State.
“Where was Mr. Maku when a serving Senator was shot in Rivers simply for attending a rally? What happened to Mr. Maku's voice when an elected governor was being harassed by a police commissioner who is supposed to take orders from him, going by the constitution? Why did Mr. Maku not raise an alarm when Rivers legislators were locked out of the State House of Assembly chambers?
“If Mr. Maku wants to know those who are seeking to truncate the nation's democracy, he should inquire from the presidency, which has been the pillar of support behind the anarchists in Rivers,” APC said.
“If the presidency wants the legislative cooperation of our members today, all he has to do is to call Mbu to order by telling him to face, squarely his policing duty and leave politics to politicians; and also ensure that no other part of the country is allowed to descend into a state of anarchy just because the presidency wants it to happen for reasons that are everything but in the national interest.
“Mr. Maku, the summary of our statement is that the presidency should be held responsible for the face-off that has now rankled you so much. Rest assured, however, that the face-off will not last another 24 hours if the presidency would stop playing the puppeteer in the Rivers crisis,” APC said.
Throwing their weight behind their party, APC senators also asked individuals and groups who thought they had flouted their party's directive to block executive bills to perish the thought.
The senators, in a statement by their Minority Leader, Senator George Akume, last night said the directive remained valid as long as the impunity in Rivers State and corruption in the Jonathan government continued.
“The attention of the APC caucus of the Senate has been drawn to some media reports purporting that APC senators have flouted the directive of the party on blocking executive bills and to ensure legislative non-cooperation.
“This directive is a legitimate democratic tool aimed at restoring the rule of law and constitutionalism in Rivers State in order to save the lives of Nigerian citizens.
“These reports are misleading as they variously misconstrue the real intendment of the APC directive and the action of the senators. The participation of APC senators in the rigorous screening of the service chiefs and the debate on the general principles of the Appropriation Bill 2014 are in fact in compliance with the directive of the party.
“The directive was not for senators to boycott their legislative business. Rather their participation will lead to the ultimate execution of the party directive.
“It needs reiterating that the Rivers crisis poses a real threat to national security and has the potential to spill over to other states if not appropriately contained. The APC as a responsible party will not fold its arms and allow the nation to slide into anarchy.
“APC's action is to forestall a clearly preventable crisis that will put further stress on our military which is already stretched to the limits in tackling the Boko Haram insurgency,The APC caucus added that in acknowledgment of party supremacy, it remained committed to the directive and asked those who thought its members’ participation in screening of service chiefs and the budget debate meant they had flouted the order not to rejoice yet.

Sending troops to Yemen Pakistan's internal matter: US

WASHINGTON – The United States condemned on Thursday's assassination attempt on its citizen in Karachi and said its consulate general in Karachi is in close contact with Pakistani authorities in this connection.

The US officials in Karachi are working to obtain more information regarding the serious assault on Debra Lobo, 55 in Pakistan's largest city, US State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said while briefing the journalists in Washington on Thursday. Expressing grief over the incident, she said that the local police authorities in Pakistan are handling the investigation.

To a query regarding the telephonic conversation between US Secretary John Kerry and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the spokesperson said that the two leaders brought an array of issues including Yemen situation under discussion.

“Secretary Kerry spoke with the prime minister on April 14th about a range of issues, including Yemen, also including the release on bail of the alleged Mumbai attack planner, Lakhvi. The secretary expressed concern that the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai attack be brought to justice. He also noted the need to keep known terrorists behind bars and to expedite justice for the victims of the family.”

She said that the prime minister expressed his commitment to seek justice for the families of the victims and to pursue all means to move the trial forward. She said the two leaders also spoke about the need to bring the conflict in Yemen to an end through a sustainable political resolution and a political transition.

To a question regarding the US position if Pakistan send troops to Yemen or not, the US spokesperson asserted it is wholly up to the country whether it participates in the ongoing Saudi-led campaign against Yemen that Riyadh says meant to tamp down the Houthi insurgency.

‘BISP embarks upon social mobilisation countrywide’

KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government through the platform of Benazir Income Support Programme has embarked upon an ambitious nationwide scheme for social mobilisation and financial literacy of deserving women across the country as per BISP surveyed database, said State Minister and BISP Chairperson Marvi Memon on Sunday.

Addressing a large meeting attended by the social mobilisers and BISP officials from Thatta, Malir and Sajawal districts, she said Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif is absolutely committed towards strengthening BISP so as to streamline empowerment of poverty stricken women of the country.

“For the very purpose a pragmatic approach has been adopted to ensure that optimum number of deserving women on BISP database genuinely benefit,” she said.

MNA Marvi Memon said it is not only that the support money has been raised for deserving women from Rs 1000/-to Rs 1200/ and then to Rs 1500 by the PML (N) government but equal attention is being paid to ensure that no genuinely deserving women of Pakistan are missed out.

“It is with this goal that BISP officials of all districts of Pakistan alongwith social mobilisers pertaining to every union council are being engaged in each province, each district, each UC for social mobilisation of those women already on the BISP approved lists as per survey conducted. The goal is to ensure that millions of women on BISP database who do not have access to CNICs are first given CNICs and then BISP cards so that their yearly 2014-15 stipend does not lapse. Next few months are critical for ensuring that maximum number of women approved for cards are not left out simply because of not being traceable,” said the BISP Chairperson.

She said the government was cognizant of the fact that these marginalised women are also vulnerable to exploitation and thus the government is making extra efforts to create financial literacy among the BISP recipients.

“It is not only to help them protect themselves against mischievous elements but also be empowered in making proper use of the tools available to facilitate them,” said Marvi Memon.

MNA Marvi Memon urged the BISP officials and social mobilisers from all the districts to realise their responsibilities and develop close coordination to safeguard BISP recipients from being hoodwinked by middleman, brokers or any unscrupulous element.

“You must sensitise them that there is absolutely no role of middleman or any person seeking share or commission,” she said.

“BISP recipients have to be also sensitised about their easy accessibility to us” through a toll free hot-line number 0800-26477 paving way for registration of FIR against these unscrupulous elements, she added.

The Chairperson said issues related to non availability of national identity cards among the deserving or difficulties faced by them in procurement of BISP cards or its replacement have to be addressed through social mobilisation.

She urged the participants of the meeting to realise their responsibilities as social mobilisers and expedite the process enabling the deserving to get their due rights.

Responding to a query, she said an in-built mechanism exists within the programme to address the issue of bogus entries with equal attention to ensure that genuine entrants are duly facilitated.

Director General, BISP-Sindh, Zafarullah Soomro, Focal Person for BISP-Sindh, and BISP Director for Karachi, Naveeda Erum assured the meeting’s participants that service levels in BISP would improve.

They were told that all relevant stakeholders including NADRA officials and concerned authorities are also on board while mapping is underway to ensure ATMs are available in accordance to the number of recipients in each of the taluka and district.

* * *
