Asthmatics are not allergic to living mites but to the airborne feces of mites and, to a much lesser extent, to dead mites. Dr. Maunder states that although living mites are difficult to remove from carpet, their feces are readily removed from carpets by proper cleaning. "A carpet regularly cleaned will not and cannot contain enough allergen to affect people. The proper maintenance of carpet completely prevents trouble from that source".

A recent study concludes that carpets may benefit indoor air quality by acting as a filter for indoor air, trapping and holding dust mites, pollutants, and allergens like pollen, pet dander and molds, which play an important role in allergic diseases. The key to maintaining good indoor air quality in a home is to remove these pollutants regularly.

As you can see, regular carpet cleaning St Charles MO are important, not just to maintain the appearance of your carpets, but for hygienic reasons, as well; contaminants in your carpet that need to be removed on a regular basis.

Waiting until your carpet looks dirty is waiting too long. In fact, the EPA recommends having carpets and upholstery cleaned at least twice a year, more often if you have children or pets.

Properly cleaning your entire home can also go a long ways in the battle to control dust mites and other indoor pollutants. You cannot see a dust mite with the naked eye, (dozens of them will fit on the head of a pin) but you can help keep their favorite breeding grounds dry and clean.

Controlling dust is very important. Besides carpeting, dust mites also thrive in upholstered furniture and bedding. Vacuuming will not remove them, but will help to remove their waste by-products and other allergens. Make sure that you use a vacuum cleaner that filters the exhausted air. Get in the habit of vacuuming your carpets and furniture thoroughly, at least a couple of times a week.">Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can damage their health, but may not know that indoor air pollution can also have significant effects. The EPA studies of human exposure to air pollutants indicate that indoor air levels of many pollutants may be 5 times higher than outdoor levels. These levels of indoor air pollutants are of particular concern because it is estimated that most people spend as much as 80% of their time indoors.

Over the past several decades, our exposure to indoor air pollutants is believed to have increased due to a variety of factors, including the construction of more tightly sealed buildings, reduced ventilation rates to save energy, the use of synthetic building materials and furnishings, and the use of chemically formulated personal care products, pesticides, and household cleaners.

In recent years, comparative risk studies performed by EPA and its Science Advisory Board have consistently ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health.

Poor indoor air quality is a leading cause of allergies in humans and pets. Allergies are an over reaction of the immune system to foreign substances. This over reaction weakens your immune system, draining your energy and leaving you more susceptible to infectious diseases caused by viruses and bacteria.

Allergic reactions can range from mildly uncomfortable to life threatening, as in a severe asthma attack. Health experts are especially concerned about people with asthma. These people have very sensitive airways that can react to various irritants, making breathing difficult. The estimated number of people with asthma has risen over 59 percent since 1970. The number of related deaths has also increased.

The largest source of indoor air pollution is from the common household dust mite. In February, 1993, John W. Maunder, Ph.D., Director of the Medical Entomology Center at the University of Cambridge, UK, published a paper entitled

The market for artificial grass is growing quickly. Driven by a combination of better manufacturing techniques combined with an increasing awareness of the longer term environmental and economic benefits. Originally it was limited to large sports clubs but now you are just as likely to see it on your neighbour’s garden.
The benefits really fall into 3 distinct groups:-
1. Lifestyle and ease of use. There is no doubt at all that in our busy lives time becomes more precious as we seek to juggle all our responsibilities. Mowing the lawn can take 2 to 3 hours out of your week and that is for a normal size garden. Artificial grass needs very little maintenance and can free up a lot of time. It is worth mentioning two distinct types of users who also find it very valuable:-
a. Older people who cannot physically mow their lawns.
b. Holiday home owners who are not always “on site” to look after their lawns.
2. Environmental issues. As our weather grows warmer there will be more pressure on restricting water usage. Hose pipe restrictions can really destroy a natural lawn, but artificial grass will not be affected. Another benefit from artificial grass is that it actively helps the environment. As well as substantially reducing water usage we also get
a. No carbon emissions from petrol driven lawn mowers.
b. No fertilisers needed.
c. Pollution from water run off carrying chemicals into the drains is minimised.
3. Special circumstances. It always surprises people to know the varied circumstances when artificial grass can be beneficial. Here is a brief list:
a. Dog runs. It can’t be dug up, its easy to clean and keep sterile and there will be no muddy paws. This makes it a favourite at dog kennels.
b. Swimming pools. Very useful as ground cover beyond the “splash back” area. No muddy areas to carry dust and dirt into the pool, no ruts from the sun loungers and stays green whatever the weather.
c. Roof gardens. If your roof is not strong enough to support a natural turf cover then artificial grass will fill in very nicely. It also means that you don’t need to worry about the grass clippings.
d. High wear and tear areas. Very often, especially with children, you can end up with parts of the garden where constant usage will not allow grass to grow properly and bald patches which can turn to mud cause real problems. Carefully laid artificial grass can blend in with surrounding features and help overcome this.
e. Event management. We have often seen artificial grass used when there are a going to be a lot of people in the garden. A good example would be if a marquee was planned.

Disadvantages of artificial grass.
In the American south, with their extreme weather conditions it can sometimes seem a little odd when you get the baked dry yard of one house right next to bright green of a neighbour who has laid artificial grass. Fortunately for the United Kingdom we have not yet had the extreme hot weather of Texas and Arizona!
Other disadvantages? Well to be honest there aren’t any. Price wise it can is usually less than paving or other artificial coverings and when you measure the investment over the life of the grass it can in fact work out cheaper than laying and maintaining natural turf.
Things you might not know about artificial grass
Some artificial grass needs an infill, this is usually sand or rubber crumb. If rubber is used then it has probably come from shredded car tyres! You can also buy artificial grass which doesn’t need an infill.
Artificial grass was originally designed for sports pitches and sold under the name of astro turf in the USA. The early versions were not very successful but more recent changes have resulted in artificial grass being adopted by very large sports clubs. In particular for their training pitches as the annual hours of pitch usage can be increased substantially.
You can now buy artificial grass cut like carpet tiles. This is often seen with coloured grass, for instance terracotta tiles. This allows you to have designer coloured pathways and surrounds.
Publicado 19th February 2014 por Ecossistemas , Arqª. How to Keep Your Baby or Child Safe On Holiday

When you are on holiday with your baby or child, there are a number of things to bear in mind:

Water safety with babies and children

Travelling to hotter countries often means access to swimming pools, paddling pools and water. Before you leave, check that the swimming pools have gates to keep crawling babies and toddlers away from the water’s edge. If not you will have to be vigilant and keep your child with you, as it is very easy for a baby to crawl off and fall into water.

Open windows

If you need to open windows on a hot holiday, move all furniture away from the open window. Children will often climb from beds and chairs onto windowsills and can easily fall. If you are staying in a house with a balcony you must make sure that your child cannot fall.

In warm countries, lots of houses and hotels have blinds rather than curtains. Be sure to tie up all looped blind cords and fly curtains, and move furniture away from the blinds to prevent strangulation.

Stairs

Notify the hotel or holiday home landlord if you need stair guards at the top and bottom of the stairs. It is often a good idea to use a travel agency that specifically provides baby-friendly or child-friendly holidays, as they will have done all the work to find safe hotels and holiday homes for you.

If you do not have a stair guard you will need to ensure that your baby or toddler cannot climb up and fall down the stairs.

Poisoning

If you are staying in a holiday home, you should find all the cleaning products and chemicals when you arrive (in hotter countries there may also be poisonous bug sprays) and put them well out of reach of your children. Keep dishwasher tablets off the ground and if you are carrying medicines you will need to find a place completely out of reach from your children.

Electrical safety

When you arrive at your holiday accommodation check that all electrical sockets are intact. You may choose to buy plug covers for the country you are visiting or check they are provided.

Burns

Families tend to do a lot more outdoor cooking on holiday, which is great fun but children can be very curious about open fires, and barbecues may not look hot. So if you are cooking on barbecues or open fires keep your child away from them.

If you take your hair straighteners on holiday do not leave them on the floor as they stay hot and can still burn your baby or toddler for around 10 minutes after they have been used.

Fire and smoke safety

When you are travelling or staying in your holiday accommodation, always make sure you know where the fire escapes are. If you have more than one child make a fire exit plan so that you and your partner and other adults know exactly who is responsible for escorting whose children to safety.

Always take a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm with you unless you know they are provided. Children succumb to poisonous fumes first. It is very important that you do not bring barbecues into a tent or caravan, as the carbon monoxide fumes are poisonous.

Allergies and food intolerances

If your baby has allergies or intolerances it’s worth learning how to explain this in the local language and taking a print-out of items that are safe or not in that language. This way you can also show it to café owners and shopkeepers.

Visit UK support websites for advice about travelling safely with conditions such as coeliac disease, as lots of other families will have good, specific advice for you and you can benefit from all their experience.

On the beach

The beach is a wonderful place for children to play but it is worth bearing in mind several potential – but preventable – accidents.

Getting lost

If your baby or toddler is mobile you will need to keep a constant eye on her, so no getting absorbed in your beach read, unfortunately. Children are so distracted on beaches that they wander off and on a busy beach can get lost very quickly.

Drowning

The sea is much harder to sit in as the salt water makes children buoyant and, with the action of the waves, even a baby who can sit stably can be easily knocked over into the water. Do not leave them unattended by the sea edge. He will love to paddle and be held by you in the water, but put him in a good floatation vest and stay in the shallows as the sea can become unexpectedly deep quickly and have dangerous riptides and currents. Also make sure your baby or toddler doesn’t get too cold – babies have a much bigger surface area to volume ratio than adults and lose heat more quickly.

Beach shoes

If your toddler is paddling, walking on the beach or exploring rock pools, comfortable water shoes will help protect them from sharp stones, hot sand or dangerous litter.

Sunburn

Even on an overcast day, skin can burn and people tend to burn more by the sea. If your baby is under six months make sure she spends most of the day in the shade (using an SPF tent). If you are in a hot country, stay out of the sun from 11am-3pm and make sure that your child is wearing a hat and cool cotton or SPF clothes that protect from the sun. Baby sunglasses that can also help with the glare and burning around the eyes.

The 15-15 rule of suncream

Apply a thick layer of children’s broad spectrum SPF sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher around 15 minutes before sun exposure (make sure your baby is not allergic to the cream you use

Create that show house look!

Have you ever wondered why new build companies such as Barratt Homes, Persimmon Homes and locally Story Homes have show homes? Why do they spend £10,000’s creating that perfect look? Why do they go to such much trouble and effort?

Show houses are staged. They go beyond a lick of paint and good clean. Show houses are dressed to create a mood and to instill desire. They somehow look bigger, brighter, warmer and cleaner. They feel loved. More importantly though, they make buyers want to buy them. They are aimed to appeal to their targeted buyer. I know this. I used to work in show homes!

You may now be thinking that show homes are all about newness. You may think that you can’t afford to rush out and buy all new furniture. I’m not going to ask you too. Instead I am going to ask you to be inspired by them. To get their look by pinching their carefully researched idea’s! I have broken the show house look down into sections. Some items will incur costs. Some will be free. All are designed to have a positive effect on your home and help it sell easier for the best possible price.

Here are my top 10 idea’s to give your home that show home magic!

1. Make your rooms look spacious

Show homes look spacious. They are clutter free. The furniture is chosen to purposely fit the room. You could create a more spacious look by taking some furniture out of a room. It’s important your viewers can see floor space. You also want to make sure the room can be walked through easily.

2. Simple decor

Quite often the decor in show homes is actually very simple. It’s designed to be easy on the eye and for the furniture and accessories to do the talking. Your decor just needs to be fresh and crisp. It doesn’t have to be magnolia everywhere, just keep it elegant and modern.

3. Clever use of Mirrors

Show homes use lots of mirrors. Mirrors bounce the light around a home really well. Big mirrors can also draw the eye away from weaker area’s such as an older fireplace. Mirrors are also great in inner hallways where there is little natural light.

4. Statement lamps and lights

Great lighting is essential. Lights are used for so many different things. They can create an atmosphere. They can set the mood. Lights can be used to highlight a feature. Great lighting can be used to draw the eye. Hang a statement chandelier in your dining room. Turn on your lamps for viewings.

5. New fresh bedding

I recommend fresh crisp white bedding to all our my clients. Now dress your bed with a luxurious throw and plumped up cushions in a colour of your choice. The key then is to add a few key accessories to your room for that coordinated show home look!

6. Luxury bathroom goodies

Hideaway the everyday shampoo’s and toothbrushes and bring out your posh bathroom goodies. Invest in new matching fluffy towels. A bathroom can be easily dressed with just a few key items. Think Molton Brown hand washes and bubble baths. Class it as treat to yourself!

7. Dress that kitchen

Look at the kitchens in show homes. See how healthy and uncluttered they look. Why not display a vase full of lemon and limes. This will add colour and last longer than flowers! If you have a superb cooker, highlight this by displaying an open cook book to the side. Is there space to dine? If so show it off!

8. Clean, clean , clean

Show homes are immaculate. They are beyond clean. Open cupboards, open the oven, look behind the sofa. It’s all exceptionally clean. Give your house a thorough clean before you put it up for sale. Make it shine. Make it sparkle. Trust me. It makes a big difference!

9. Define each room

Do all your rooms have a purpose? Do your bedrooms look like bedrooms? Show each room off it to it’s best advantage. If you have junk room, now is the time to transform it. Buyers need to see each room used properly. Show buyers where there is the space to dine. Make the viewing easier for them. You’d never find a “spare room” in a show house!

10. Don’t forget the accessories

Accessories are a show homes best friend. They are what ties in the outfit for a fashion dresser. They create the illusion for a magician. Use them to show off your home. In the kitchen. In the bathroom. Think cushions, candles, artwork, lamps. Think flowers. Pick a colour scheme and stick to it. Just like a show home does!

Why not visit some show homes this weekend. There are some great ones you can visit locally in both Lancaster and Morecambe. Take a look. Be inspired and then ask me for a tailored plan for your home.

My name is Michelle. I am the branch valuer at JDG Estate Agents. If you would like a free home moving consultation, please call me on 01524 843322 or my colleague Emma on 01524 409100.

A British private security company that has been accused of numerous human rights violations has been handed a $118 million deal by the Pentagon to provide "operating support services" for the Guantanamo Bay naval base that houses the U.S. military’s notorious prison.

The Department of Defense announced earlier this week that G4S has been granted the contract to provide services that include "family housing, facility management, facility investment, other (swimming pools), custodial, pest control, integrated solid waste management, grounds maintenance and landscaping, base support vehicles and equipment, electrical, wastewater, water, and limited facilities support functions." The statement did not mention any duties relating to the Guantanamo Bay prison, which currently holds 149 men without charge or trial.

But Kat Craig, legal director for UK-based legal charity Reprieve, told the Independent that "G4S must make clear exactly what the nature of its work at Guantanamo is."

Customer Feedback for Whitehaven

Overall Experience - Excellent
A very well appointed house with facilities and equipment that ensure 12 people of varying ages can spend a relaxed time together in a very easy living environment. The decorations are contemporary yet welcoming and 'homely' so our party with ages ranging from 6 to 66 all enjoyed their stay with many happy memories.

Friendly Service - Excellent
House Keeper Maxine was very welcoming and helpful as were the cleaning staff on the day of our departure.

Location - Excellent
Excellent with few cars and quiet nights allowing after dinner strolls around the country lanes directly from the house with walks to the forest just a few hundred yards. Easy and quick car trips to all the major sights.

Information provided - Excellent
Welcome - Excellent
Cleanliness - Excellent
All equipment and facilities were cleaned to a high standard with very clean and well maintained showering / washing areas.

Facilities - Excellent
Every thing needed to occupy our party was provided, the undercover swimming pool allowed enjoyment irrespective of the weather and without the concern of children enjoying themselves potentially disturbing neighbouring properties. The heated pavilion proved and unexpected bonus for us all providing a central point for all through out the day with several dinners eaten their in preference to the dinning room.
Fixtures and Fittings - Excellent
Decoration - Excellent
Feeling of Space - Excellent
Equipment -Excellent
Value for Money -Excellent

Not to be taken as a complaint but an observation ...The owners would benefit from reduced traffic in house with the addition of a shower facility in the swimming pool, allowing guests wash off chlorine rather than using facilities in house. Foxconn factory worker... in Pennsylvania

Global economics are, slowly, shifting the logic of outsourcing and bringing factory jobs back to the United States. But this process can be a little complicated. Because of demand from existing customers for made-in-the-USA products, Foxconn, the iPhone-manufacturing company that's become emblematic of grueling factory conditions in China, that it would expand its operations to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The Harrisburg factory will be Foxconn's largest in the U.S.--but not its first. The company already has outposts in Texas and Indiana. In China, a Foxconn factory might have its own hospital, a series of company-backed stores, and hundreds of thousands of workers, many of whom live in dorms and work more than 60-hour weeks. The Pennsylvania factory will have 500 employees and U.S. labor laws to contend with. And workers will be doing “high-precision” manufacturing--working a different sort of assembly line than their Chinese counterparts.

It's not just Foxconn that's seeing some advantage in American-made goods, either. Other sectors are looking at “onshoring” jobs, and for the first time in a long, long time, the manufacturing picture is looking rosier.

Quantitative Editor

As part of FiveThirtyEight's expansion beyond sports and politics, to include economics, culture, and science, data master Nate Silver hired Andrew Flowers, an analyst for the Atlanta Fed, to be his new site's Quantitative Editor--a job Silver describes as “a cross between an economist, a quant, an editor, and a writer.”

There are increasing numbers of journalists who fit this description--numbers people who can write, and whose data-geekdom is championed, rather than siloed. Now the job has a catchy name, and every news organization is going to want one.

Drone safety expert

The drone industry is optimistic about its economic potential: One industry study predicted that the business of flying unmanned aircraft could create 100,000 jobs in the next decade, and 70,000 just in the first three years in which drone-flying is legal. A pilot could earn as much as $115,000 annually.
First, though, the Federal Aviation Administration needs to be convinced that these things are safe. The agency , from Alaska to Texas to Virginia, where researchers will evaluate risks and develop protocols like standard categories, operator codes, and certification requirements. Making up those rules might sound dull, but it means asking simple, yet mind-boggling questions: How do we organize these small, flying objects? Who gets to fly one? How are we going to keep them from crashing into planes?
The test sites have approval through 2017 to try to find the answers, and, as a bonus, create many, many jobs in places as diverse as upstate New York and North Dakota.

http://www.fastcompany.com/3024811/how-to-be-a-success-at-everything/7-of-the-weirdest-most-promising-new-jobs-in-2014">7 Of The Weirdest, Most Promising New Jobs In 2014

Cannabis capitalists, cryptocurrency traders, and drone safety experts are among the greatest, strangest new gigs around. Do any of them work for you?

For the first time in years, job growth projections aren't entirely dismal, and plenty of people are itching for a new gig. According to one survey, 20% of Americans are looking to change jobs in the next year. Economists are saying that there could be more full-time, high-quality opportunities out there, too. And while you could look for a job in sales or finance or engineering, there are more exciting options--weird new gigs that hardly existed six months ago but that, by this time next year, you won't stop hearing about. Here are seven of the most peculiarly promising new lines of work out there.

Cannabis capitalist

A year ago, the ArcView Group, a network of angel investors focused on the cannabis industry, had 25 members. Now, says Troy Dayton, the group's CEO, they've got about 120 high net worth people, who're looking to build what Dayton, a long-time advocate for legalization, likes to call “the next great American industry.”

“Everything changed when Washington and Colorado passed legalization in 2012,” says Dayton, “but it didn't really, really change until last week.”

As of January 1, responsible adults (irresponsible ones, too, most likely) can walk into stores in Colorado and Washington and legally buy pot for recreational use. And there are plenty of entrepreneurs ready to take advantage of these new markets--not just growers and dispensary owners, but purveyors of vending machines, specially composed soil, power pipe cleaners, inventory software, topical creams, and slick accessories. They just need capital.

And there are an increasing number of VC and private equity firms eager to provide it. A few, like ArcView and Privateer Holdings, which is run by Yale School of Management alums, have gotten a jump on the market, but new firms are popping open, too. There's plenty of opportunity to go around: Analyses from both ArcView and Medical Marijuana Business Daily predict that, in the next year, the industry's revenue will at least double.

Insta-driver

These days, simply driving a car around can mean being on the entrepreneurial cutting edge, as companies like Uber, Sidecar, and Lyft are making it easy for anyone with a set of wheels to make money playing cabbie. With a new-enough car and some basic preliminary info about the company of choice and the city streets, almost anyone can sign up to start providing rides-on-demand to people who'd rather push a button on an app than call or hail a cab.

Whether this is actually a job is up for debate: Sidecar and Lyft both call the people behind the wheel “community drivers,” and Lyft calls the payment for the ride a “donation.” But it's possible to drive for UberX--Uber's more casual, and cheaper, service--and make as much (or more) money in a year as a yellow cab driver might. While there's been some disagreement between drivers and Uber whether fare cuts have been good or bad for business, recruits to the UberX ranks reportedly range from a startup founder waiting out a non-compete clause to a transportation engineer with a master's degree, who drives full-time.

The ultimate 2014 driving job, however, could be one that does not involve driving at all--car companies might be eager to show off their newly driver-less cars, but, according to law in test-ground states like Nevada and Michigan, there still needs to be an actual human in the driver's seat.

Google Glass model

Dressing up models in dorky tech gear isn't exactly a new gambit. Google Glass first did the rounds at New York Fashion week in 2012, and last year appeared in Vogue's inimitable September issue. But none of it's worked to convince the masses that Glass is cool, exactly, and with a new version coming in 2014, there should be a whole new round of chances for attractive people to give the device a spin. And until someone (okay, Apple) designs a smartwatch that an average person would want to put on, models are the wearables industry's best bet for making their products look good.

Cryptocurrency trader

Every day, it's looking more certain that the Bitcoin boom is here to stay. Recently a U.K. startup announced it was opening a Bitcoin vault insured by Lloyd's of London, and the inventor of the world's first Bitcoin ATM started negotiating a rental agreement to install it in a New York City bubble tea shop.

With hundreds of cryptocurrencies out there, and a burgeoning number of exchanges, speculation in digital coin has become rampant. At the January 1 opening of the Bitcoin Center of New York--just a few doors down from the New York Stock Exchange--spontaneous trading broke out on the floor. Some early adopters have transitioned to trading full time. One key to cleaning up, says Nick Spanos, a founding member of the new center, is to watch for currencies to jump from less highly esteemed exchanges to a major hub like BTC-e.

If all this sounds appealing, the Bitcoin Center is offering classes in trading digital currency.

Exeter in Devon is expected to see the best of temperatures in the South West today at 82.4F (28C), slightly down on highs of 87.8F (31C) in Bournemouth, Dorset, on Sunday.

Mr Jackson said the north west of Scotland would be the coolest part of the country today, with temperatures of just 59F (15C) or 60.8F (16C).

Retailers and supermarkets reported booming sales as shoppers spent thousands of pounds on barbecues, food, sunscreen and garden furniture.

Asda said sales of barbecues had risen by 204 per cent in the past two weeks; charcoal and fuel is up by 176 per cent.

People were also warned against swimming in open waters and quarries after three people died in the West Midlands in the past week.

John Woodhall, a water-rescue specialist with West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “Quarries are not like swimming pools. The water is much colder.

“You go from 28C [82.4F] outside to 10C [50F] in the water. You can get muscle cramps and stitches. Even strong swimmers can slip under water and you may not make it back up again.”

Most people are aware that out...

Most people are aware that outdoor air pollution can damage their health, but may not know that indoor air pollution can also have significant effects.

Get in the habit of vacuuming your carpets and furniture thoroughly, at least a couple of times a week." width="100"/>

The market for artificial gras...

How to Keep Your Baby or Child...
