This 2000 summary, drafted by the API's benzene task force, outlined a "strategy" by the petrochemical industry for funding research to establish current environmental levels of benzene "do not pose a risk ... to the general public" and that current occupational limits on the chemical "do not create an unacceptable risk to workers."

The benzene documents are just the start. In coming months, we’ll be posting hundreds of thousands of pages of discovery material from lawsuits involving lead, asbestos, silica, hexavalent chromium and PCBs, among other dangerous substances.

And we’ll be on the lookout for other documents.

The inspiration for the project came when we realized that in CPI’s reporting on environmental and workplace issues, we routinely obtained reams of court documents.

Often, these documents hold secrets found nowhere else.

Last year we reached out to William Baggett Jr., a lawyer in Lake Charles, Louisiana, who had acquired more than 400,000 pages of documents from a decade-long case against manufacturers of vinyl chloride, a cancer-causing chemical used in plastics.

Baggett agreed to give us all of them.

At the same time, public health historians Merlin Chowkwanyun, David Rosner and Gerald Markowitz were collecting court documents to create a public database and had approached Baggett.

We decided to collaborate.

Chowkwanyun is currently a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and will be an assistant professor of sociomedical sciences at Columbia next year.

Rosner is Ronald Lauterstein Professor of Sociomedical Sciences and History at Columbia. Markowitz is a professor of history at the City University of New York.

Both Rosner and Markowitz have served as expert witnesses in a number of major cases related to these documents and have written Deceit and Denial: The Deadly Politics of Industrial Pollution and other books and articles based on them.

This is not the first database of its ilk.

The University of California, San Francisco, maintains a massive collection of documents from tobacco-related lawsuits called the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library, which exceeds 80 million pages.

Our database allows you to search for a word, combination of words or an exact phrase in any of the documents.

You can also:

Do a search that excludes a word by putting a '-' sign in front of the word.

Do a fuzzy search that includes variations of a word by putting a tilde '~' at the end of a word with the numbers of characters that don’t have to match exactly. For example, 'planit~2' will match 'planet.'

Do a search that optionally contains a word by putting a '|' between the words.

Do a search with a phrase by putting double quotes around the phrase.

Each document will include the court case from which it came, including the case title, case number, court as well as date filed and date terminated.

The original complaint for each lawsuit is also part of the database.

Soon, we will make available a robust set of text-mining tools that will allow researchers to construct chronologies of documents; generate lists of common words, phrases and names; and sort documents in a number of ways.

Qualified researchers will also have access to an even larger set of documents that will eventually contain millions of pages.

Robert Proctor, a professor of the history of science at Stanford, has used the UCSF tobacco archive extensively to do research for several books.

He called it “an unparalleled treasure” that gives researchers the ability “to look through the keyhole of the mansion of this hidden world and see [corporate officials’] private thoughts, their intent, their ruminations, their jokes, their plans, how they treat their workers, how they treat the public…”

Proctor said he sees value in a similar archive on toxic chemicals.

“The internal records of the chemical industry are known only to a tiny group of lawyers and journalists,” he said.

“This is going to create a new kind of democracy of knowledge. It also will set the stage for whistleblowers to come forward with documents.”

That’s our hope.

The search interface includes options to send us documents or contact us.

The ultimate goal, to borrow Proctor’s phrasing, will be to give users “a strong magnet to pull rhetorical needles out of archival haystacks.”

How to protect your #skin, #hair from pool chlorine!

Swimming or relaxing in the pool during these hot summers may give you the much needed respite from the scorching heat, but this joyous moment can also bring trauma to your skin and hair.

This is mostly because of chlorine, a bacteria and germ fighting ingredient that is added to most pools to keep them clean and fresh.

Hence, celebrity Dermatologist Kiran Lohia, Medical Director of Lumiere Dermatology, New Delhi, tells you how to keep pool chrorine from destroying your hair and skin and look gorgeous even as you continue to enjoy your regular swimming.

For your Skin

The chlorine in your pool may help keep it clean, but it can be quite drying and irritating to the skin. Repetitive chlorine exposure can cause swimmer’s itch or dermatitis, resulting in this particularly phenomena. Furthermore, if the pH (acid-base balance) of the pool and chlorine is not balanced to 7.2-7.5, then these symptoms can worsen; leaving your skin with a red rash that is uncomfortable to say the least.

So, how do you solve this? First of all, make sure the pH of the pool is balanced to the required pH, thereby reducing your risk of this pesky issue. Then, make sure you wash the chlorine off your skin immediately after you swim so that this chemical cannot cause further damage. Finally, make sure you use a good body lotion immediately before you go in the pool to protect your skin and after you shower to seal moisture in. This doubling up of your lotion usage will help improve your skin so you can continue your pool swimming!

For your Hair

Unfortunately, chlorine is extremely damaging to the hair shaft. Hair has a protective layer of natural sebum that keeps it supple and shiny. Chlorine has a drying effect that strips those oils right off, causing hair to break and look frizzy and aged.

Chlorine and salt can also get under the hair’s cuticles; the scale-like layers that cover the shaft and make it look shiny and smooth. The cuticles usually are flat, but when they’re roughed-up, bumpy and uneven, the hair looks brittle and unmanageable. The worst part is that the problems of too much chlorine doesn’t just look and feel unappealing; it can also weaken the hair so much that you get breakage, split ends and the hair ultimately becomes too fragile to style.

Luckily, preventing chlorine damage is possible. The best thing to do is to start wearing a swim cap. This tightly adherent cap will prevent the water from affecting the hair, so that you can keep your treasured locks gorgeous. Now, for those that feel uncomfortable in swim caps,

There is also a solution for those that feel uncomfortable in swim caps. First of all, you can try to wet your hair with fresh water first, so that less chlorine water can saturate the already wet hair. Another option is to apply oil or conditioner before entering the pool, so that you can have a protective barrier on your hair cuticle.

#Health #HealthTips #LatestMedicalNews
www.medibiztv.com

Any pet owner will tell you that their animals are a part of their family and welcome guests at any summer pool party or barbecue. In the midst of all that family fun, safety should still be a top priority.

Safe swimming for dogs
Pools can be great for dogs who love to go for a swim, especially on a hot summer day. There are a few advantages of dogs going for a dip with their owners in the backyard pool—it helps to keep them cool and is a great source of exercise—but there are many safety considerations dog owners should keep in mind.

Many breeds are naturals in the water and quite adept at swimming. However, even the strongest swimmers should fall under the same rules as children. Never leave your dog unsupervised in a pool or any other body of water (e.g. lake, pond or river). For this reason, it is important to fence off your pool from your pet so they can not get there without human supervision.

Furthermore, not all breeds are good swimmers. In fact, some dogs, such as the pug or bulldog, are not naturally keen on water and are not natural swimmers, due mostly to their weight distribution and mass. These dogs should avoid all water that is deeper than their chest height.

It is important to be especially diligent in watching puppies and older dogs around the pool. Puppies may take naturally to water if it is part of their breed, but they still need to be closely monitored for signs of fatigue or distress. Older dogs have less energy; if they have medical conditions, they can lose their balance and risk falling into the pool.

Teaching your pet pool safety
If you have a pool, have recently gotten a new puppy and intend to let the puppy swim in the pool, it is a great idea to teach the dog some basic pool safety. You will need to ensure there is a way for the dog to easily get out of the pool and teach them how to use it. If your pool has built-in stairs the dog can use, that's great. If you don't have any easy access built in, you may want to purchase a ramp they can use to easily get out of the pool on their own.

You should never throw a dog into a pool. Even if the dog has been in the pool before and is adept at swimming, it could very likely be traumatic for the animal and could lead to panic while in the water. Also never submerge your animal or play roughly with it in the pool, as this behaviour could also lead to panic and fear.

Keeping your cat safe
If you have a cat, it will probably instinctually avoid a pool as most cats are hesitant to get wet. If you have an outdoor cat, the best way to ensure they do not get into the pool is to install a floating pool alarm, which will sound if the surface is disturbed.

The best advice is to keep your animal away from the pool when it is not in use. A fence with a locking gate is an ideal solution to ensure your animal does not wander into the pool area when they are not supposed to be there.

Protecting your pet from pool chemicals
A big part of owning a pool is the maintenance, which inevitably involves cleaning with chemicals such as chlorine. It is important to remember that dogs should never drink chlorinated water. Ensure your dog has a supply of fresh water nearby, both to avoid the temptation and to keep them hydrated. You also need to make sure your chemical mix in the pool is correct. If you use too much chlorine, it will upset your dogs eyes; if you use too little, green algae can occur and make your dog ill. When in doubt, consult a pool maintenance professional about your chemical use.

Even if your chemical content is spot-on, chlorine can still cause problems for your pets. As with people, chlorine can make your dog's skin itch if it is not washed off after he or she leaves the pool. Use a clean supply of water, such as a garden hose, to wash your animal off. This will rinse its fur and skin of most of the chlorine, reducing the risk of skin irritation, not to mention lessen the risk of the dog licking its fur and accidentally ingesting chlorine residue.

Dogs are curious creatures who tend to be interested in everything around them. They are usually eager and want to sniff and explore, so make sure the chemicals you use in your pool are safety stored away in a pool house, shed or garage so the dog can't get near them. Even a small taste of those potent cleaners can make your dog quite ill.

Pet CPR
The best precaution you can take to protect your furry friend is to take a pet CPR and first aid course. This is especially encouraged this for pet owners with pools.

As fun as the pool can be for pets, accidents do happen; being able to resuscitate your pet if needed will help you prevent those tragedies from occurring.

Ian McConachie is senior communicator with the Toronto Humane Society. Summer Home Repair Tips: Pool Maintenance
Depending on where you live, it's probably been a good six months since your pool has been used for swimming. Get it ready for summer by cleaning it up, leveling the water, ensuring that your pumps are working and balancing your chemicals. HOMEOWNER TIP: Look into an energy-efficient pool pump to help keep your electric bill down during the summer months.

And that makes swimming something you can do for your entire life—a major bonus because it can literally help you stay younger: "Our research shows that habitual swimmers are biologically up to 20 years younger than their actual age," Stager says. The data, which were presented at an American College of Sports Medicine Conference, revealed that a swimmer's blood pressure, cholesterol levels, cardiovascular performance, central nervous system, and cognitive functioning are all comparable to someone far younger.">Best Swimming Workout: Lose Body Fat in the Pool
Swimming workouts burn fat, trim inches and help you get stronger, fitter and healthier than ever

PUBLISHED: MAY 7, 2010 | BY SELENE YEAGER

A pool might not be the first place you think of going when you're looking to shape up and slim down—but perhaps it should be. No other workout burns calories, boosts metabolism, and firms every muscle in your body (without putting stress on your joints) better than a swimming workout.

Look no further than superstar Natalie Coughlin to observe how water can whittle a sexy, sculpted silhouette. And you don't have to be an Olympic gold medalist to get the perfect body. When researchers at Indiana University compared recreational fitness swimmers with non-swimmers, they found that swimmers of all ages had more lean muscle and trimmer waists and hips.

And while swimming may not offer the lace-up-your-shoes-and-go convenience of running, all you need are three key items—swimsuit, cap, and goggles—and you're set to hit the water. So go ahead: Make a splash with one of the best workouts for women!

Why Water Works
The body-shaping benefits of swimming workouts are the result of a perfect storm of calorie burn and muscle recruitment. An easy swim burns around 500 calories an hour, while a vigorous effort can torch almost 700. And because water is nearly 800 times denser than air, each kick, push, and pull is like a mini resistance workout for your entire body—especially your core, hips, arms, shoulders, and glutes. So in addition to blasting calories as you swim, you build lean muscle, which ignites your metabolism so that you burn more calories once you've showered and dried off.

The irony is that while swimming makes you lean and mean, it's also kind to your body. Water basically neutralizes gravity, so you become virtually weightless when immersed, giving your joints a much-needed vacation.
And that makes swimming something you can do for your entire life—a major bonus because it can literally help you stay younger: "Our research shows that habitual swimmers are biologically up to 20 years younger than their actual age," Stager says. In addition to yeast infection, Bacterial infections of the vagina most often are noted by a malodorous discharge. Noted most often after intercourse, with menses or even using the bathroom.

Prevention of vaginal infections involves a small amount of planning and dedication to avoid the cycle of recurrent vaginitis. Yeast and Gardnarella the bad guys are normal residents of the vagina along with lactobacilli >> the good guys. Any change in the vaginal pH such with intercourse or douching can tip the balance of this vaginal environment. When the pH rises either the yeast or gardnerella overgrow resulting in symptoms. A low vaginal pH prevents vaginal infections by preventing the “BAD” guys from taking over.

Therefore if you are bothered by recurrent vaginal infections you should:

1.Take a probiotic such as align, florastor, or refrigerated variety from health food stores.
2.Change out of wet swim suits or other garments, dry off with a towel and use a blow dryer to be certain you lady parts are dry.
3.Wear only cotton undergarments. Silk or synthetic materials prevents the vagina from breathing and in turn promotes infections.
4.Certain antibiotics are likely to result in a yeast infection.
5.Check with your doctor for recommendations.Make an appointment with your GYN care provider before you are miserable.
6.Self diagnosis is incorrect over half the time so if the over the counter medicines do not help call us today!

At Peachtree Women’s Clinic we hope you have a wonderful summer and enjoy yourself free from vaginal infections.

He says that the school has given him a lot; he learnt to read and write Urdu in this school and also learnt enough English to have a rudimentary conversation. Abdul supports his wife and three children by working at KAS and works hard all day to be able to provide them with all they have. I admire Abdul as he has the right attitude towards his work. He can be seen around campus with a cheery smile on his face as he does his job and always greets me with a warm smile and a cheerful salam. I think we can all learn from Abdul and others like him that though we may not have everything we would like to, if you work hard, life can still be enjoyable.
A surprising 60% of pool owners experience two full algae blooms every season. These blooms sap your pool chemistry and take time and money to clean up, so let's take a look at preventing them. The key is to remove phosphates from your pool, because those are the primary food source for algae. Phosphates are found in fertilizer, cosmetics, decaying plants and municipal water, so dirt blowing into your pool, sprinkler runoff, leaves, pool chemicals containing TSP and so on are all common ways that phosphates get introduced into your pool water. Some of these issues can be avoided by making sure that your landscaping isn't causing runoff to flow into your pool, but you can't keep them out completely. Regular pool maintenance, including removing leaves and debris, cleaning your filters, and monitoring your water chemistry using a phosphate test kit will help. There are pool chemicals that are specifically designed to reduce phosphates; you can use these to reduce their levels to near zero.
