Caring for your hot tub during winter
There is no doubt that your hot tub will have been well used and well maintained throughout the summer months but as the hot weather begins to dwindle some of you may no longer feel brave enough to bare all in the colder temperatures; therefore deserting your hot tub and leaving it to its own devices. But what happens when you lift that cover next summer? You are not going to be met with a nice clean hot tub that’s for sure and if you are not careful it may not even work. Just remember that it is easier and much cheaper to maintain your hot tub over the winter, rather than leaving it and then trying to rectify any problems afterwards.
One of the worst things that can happen to your hot tub in the winter months is frozen pipes. If you have a hot tub that has a system that is designed to prevent this from happening you need to make sure it is set to “no-freeze” or something similar so that the spa maintains a constant temperature. If you don’t have a setting such as this you will need to reprogram your hot tub so that it comes on every 15 minutes. This will keep the warm water pumping through the pipes preventing them from freezing.
Make sure that you have a good insulating cover on your hot tub so that the heat can be contained. If snow is gathering on top of your cover, remember to scrape it off as most hot tub covers are not designed to hold the weight of snow.
If you drain and clean your hot tub at the end of autumn you will be ok to leave the hot tub as it is until the end of the cold weather.
There are many of you that prefer to stay away from your hot tub during the winter months but equally there are just as many of you that will find using your hot tub as the snow falls around you one of the most exhilarating things you could do. If this is the case, you must take extra care to ensure that it is running at its best!
Pool Questions...

Pool owners who've been doing this longer than I have! (2+ years) I have questions. And if you're in the VA area, all the better. Or, really, if you're in any sort of area battling pollen.

Meet my pool. The water is actually clear. It's just a matter of getting rid of the pollen sitting on the surface. Now I know naturally, this will fade as we move in to summer. However... It's hot enough. The water is at a fantastic temperature. I want to swim. My kids are begging.

These are some ridiculous questions I'm about to ask. I'm pretty sure I know the answers already. I just want validation. Or something I don't know about.

1) Is there a way to get rid of this shite quickly? I know it would be a daily, repetitive process, but work with me here. A different skimmer net to skim it off the top? Something?

2) This is the more ridiculous because we've swum in far worse lakes before, I'm sure, but somehow it feels different with a personal pool: do you still swim even with the pollen in the water? For some reason my brain is stuck on the fact that the water isn't the way I usually like it to be.

PERTINENT INFORMATION
As in, read this before responding.

Pool specs:
15x30 jewel shape
3.5 ft to 8 ft
20,000 gallons
Vinyl liner
Hayward filtration equipment / pumps

Covers:
Before you suggest a cover: I have a solar cover. That is the only cover I have besides a winter safety cover and I have no fundage or desire to buy another and no, I'm not screwing with that safety one because we don't even have the bolts sunk for it. The solar cover helps somewhat with protecting from pollen, but of course it's not an exact fit per se, so some still gets through. If it's my only option, I'll run with it, though.

5 Easy Steps to Preparing your Swimming Pool for the Winter

With winter fast approaching it may be time to start considering how to prepare your inground swimming pool for the long winter ahead. Proper #winterizing helps fight algae build up as well as diminishes winter damage to assure a great summer swimming season.

Here are 5 Basic Steps to best prepare your swimming pool for the winter season:

Step 1 : The most important starting point is to check the pH and acidity levels in the pool. Proper balancing now will insure easier balancing at the opening of next season. Visit our store, Juliano's Pools on 321 Talcottville Road in Vernon CT to utilize our FREE Professional Water Testing Station!

Step 2: Drain water from the pump, filter and if applicable, the pool heater. If water is not drained from these areas, the water will freeze during the colder months and could damage the parts.

Step 3: To protect your pool from freezing water it is recommended to drain the pool water to about 4-6 inches below the pool skimmer.

Step 4: Clean the pool thoroughly by brushing down the sides and removing the automatic cleaner before you cover for the winter. The cover should then be placed tightly over the entire pool to avoid leaves and water from entering.

Step 5: Maintain the chemical balance of the pool throughout the winter. If you keep the pool covered during the entire season, this should be easy since debris and sun are what usually remove vital chemicals such as, chlorine form the water. Another option could be to simply drain the entire pool for the season and refill in spring when the risk of freeze has passed.

By following these simple steps, you will protect your valuable asset and set you up for a pain free opening of your pool the next season.
